Apple Cider Vinegar to aid in weight loss?

Quote  |  Reply

I saw something today that said that apple cider vinegar aids in weight loss.  My Grandma gave me a book years ago about the health benefits of taking apple cider vinegar, but I never read it and never tried it... I am thinking about cracking that sucker open to see what the benefits are.  Anyone have any thoughts?

I used ACV as a conditioner for a while.

I have never ingested it.  It doesn't smell yummy.

You'll have to post again to share your results if you start.

Well I read that you should take it in fruit juice or with honey to stand the taste and only 2 teaspoons twice a day, so it is not that much, but I am not sure if I am going to try this or not.  I want to know the risks, if any, before I try this as a supplement.  Again I eat really healthy and work out, so this would not replace any of that, just supplement it, should I decide to try it.

I've recently started ACV twice a day, but I don't know if that in and of itself has actually helped of it is other things I've also been doing.  I think it does seem to help with my sugar cravings.  There's lots who think it is just bunk but my grandfather swears by it too, and it is cheap and doesn't seem to be hurting me in any way.

Google "Bragg's" and you should find tons of info.  You want the organic ACV with the mother if you try it--don't just pick up the stuff on the salad dressing aisle!

At least it's a much cheaper version of the magic diet pill mentality, so there's that

Does it work if you add it to a recipe?  Or do you just have to down it.

There are hundreds of old wives tales about the benefits of apple cider vinegar.  I have no idea if they are true, but I do know that the proponents of this are talking about natural apple cider vinegar, not distilled or refined.  It will have a sediment in the bottom of the bottle called the "mother."  The only brand I'm familar with is Bragg's, sold with lots of hype and too good to be true claims.

Personally, I doubt it can do anything to aid weight loss.

I've never used it for any weight-loss benefits (it smacks of fad diets) however I sometimes put it on salads and it's often used in vegan baking. I like the taste of it.

There seems to be a lot of information out there for and against.  I don't think that it in itself would make you lose weight.  I do not believe in magic pills or remedies, but there seem to be some health benefits.  I am going to pull out that book when I get home.  I am still not sure if I am going to try this.  If it won't harm me in any way, sure, but I want to be sure first.  I actually have some Bragg's at home for other things, so it wouldn't be hard for me to try it, but I am not sure...

I don't think I'd use it for weight loss but I have heard and have friends/family that have used it to help with digestion. You need to take it before your meal though. This was for people with digestive problem, guess the vinegar (acid) helps break down the food for those of us with low acidity in our stomaches.

The only way I can see it aiding in weight loss is the acid would give you stomach issues and heartburn. I would be unable to eat after drinking an acid like vinegar!

I think apple cider vinegar could be helpful in weight loss - but only if you use it as a substitute for something that has a lot of calories, like ranch dressing perhaps. Wink  Anything beyond that seems to be in the realm of old wives' tales without any real reason to think it is truly beneficial.

There is some evidence in the media that vinegar can help lower the glycemic index of higher gi foods.  It aids in slowing the digestion of foods prone to digesting too quickly leaving one hungry and perhaps instigating or exacerbating problems with insulin resistance.  Cinnamon has been shown to do this as well.

I do know that taking a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar when you are sick helps to break up mucus in your throat. Normally I take a tablespoon of the ACV and immediately follow it with some orange juice. The acidity in the OJ takes away from the bitter taste of the ACV. (you get used to it after about a week).

That is interesting Mollywms... I have had this cold for over a week now, maybe I'll try it just for the cold and see what happens?!

i drink about two gulps of it before my dinner each day :)
im not sure if it actually does anything for weight loss but it tastes yummy and i can down it from the bottle. I think it does help with certain cravings though, and it also curbs your appetite so you're less likely to overeat at a meal.
