Applebees broccoli??
I went out to dinner with a friend tonight. She's a picky eater and she chose Applebees. I am not usually a big Applebees fan (though I like the spinach and artichoke dip with chips) but I didn't mind because I knew they had a Weight Watchers menu with the calories printed right on it. I was pleased that I was able to find an entree that fit perfectly within my calorie allotment for dinner. I ordered the tilapia and it came with a side of broccoli which I didn't think twice about because the menu clearly stated exactly what I was getting and the calories involved. A couple of times I noticed that there was something on the broccoli as I ate it, something salty and somewhat tasty. I was trying hard to carry on a conversation without a lull (something that is hard with this particular friend) so I didn't think about it until I got home.
What the crap did they put on that broccoli and how much can I really trust that my meal only had 310 calories?? I skipped the dessert I had saved room for just in case. I have heartburn anyway and I never get heartburn. *grumble*
Hmmm......
Tilapia is really low-cal, especially grilled. Somewhere around 110 calories for 3 ounces. The broccoli (alone) is like 30 calories/cup. They may have used seasoning salt and a bit of butter...but I am pretty sure your meal was right around 310.
Amazing how you can have so much food for so little calories if it is cooked correctly!!!
oh man - I know what you mean! The same thing happened to me.
And the broccoli and tilapia were IN ADDITION to the rice pilaf.
The dish was amazingly good - and that's what scared me.
I agree - the broccoli tasted buttery and I was a little skeptical. But I think they probably just used a butter flavoring. like maybe Molly Butter.
Who knows?
Yeah I think Applebees fudges their numbers a little...personally I dont eat there often but when I travel I some times gravitate to eat a salad and their portobello mushroom sandwich....I modify it and ask for mustard and tomato slice versus some of the other junk on it...
Yes, the rice was easily adding 150 calories to the deal, rice is super caloric. I just wonder if they are giving us broccoli that they would give along with "normal" meals, coated in a nice buttery sauce, but only counting the broccoli as being steamed in the calorie tabulation.
Ha ha, I agree oxymoron00. The whole thing was suspiciously tasty and satisfying.
I'm going to start a diet conspiracy theory website, I'm really excited to become a full fledged nut job.
One of the news shows did a special in which they used a lab to analyze entrees from various chain restaurants that claimed calories/fat on the items in teh menu, such as Applebee's Weight Watchers items. Unfortunately, most of them were WAY higher in calories and fat than the menu states.
You have to think about the people making your food - they probably don't care, don't use proper measurements, and that makes a huge difference.
My sister used to work at Applebee's and told me they use that no-cal buttery spray on the WW veggies, I believe. The normal veggies have butter and I think a little parmesan cheese on them. Maybe they gave you the regular veggies instead!
wouldnt that be illegal however of restaurants to post false calories/fat in their items? grr.
i too, had that tilapia dish, it was excellent!
I have asked my server and she stated that it was a low cal butter flavored sauce. I thought it was too good also. She went on to say that she preferred it to the real thing when she eats her lunch as well. I'm sure things might be a little higher then they should be just because of all the different cooks but I have eaten there several times and have never had it hinder my weight loss. I also really love their onion soup.
This news of the fake butter spray/sauce calms me somewhat. There was a lot of it on mine, like globs of it. I weighed myself the next morning and I was down a pound so I suppose I can't shake my fist angrily anymore anyway.
Note to self: have two desserts tonight to make up for skipped dessert Tuesday.
Will I lose weight if I eat the same food over and over?
You can lose weight despite eating the same food day-after-day as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn. In fact, eating the... Read more
