Apples! Favorite types!
When I got to college my roommate got me into Golden Delicious, which had a sweeter flavor, but were less firm.
A couple months ago a friend had me try the honey crisp, and they were firm and sweet, but not around often.
So now I'm on a quest to find the best tasting apple! I just tried a Braeburn and I didn't like it. It was too mealy for my tastes. Yesterday I tried a Fuji and it is by far my favorite so far. I still have a Jazz and a Rome at home to try. I don't like Granny Smiths at all, they're too sour.
Basically, I want to know what everyone's favorite apple is and why. Possibly help me along on my journey to find the best apple ever grown :)
Reason: Released as sticky
Apples are my favorite food. I'm obsessed with gala and pink ladies. give them a try. galas are really crisp and fresh and pink ladies are sweet.
Apples are one of my favorite foods! Way to make a great discovery!
Fuji apples were my fav for the longest, but I love Cameo now and a crisp Golden Delicious is always good. Pink Ladys are sweeter but still crunchy. I agree - it's hard to find a good Braeburn (mushy) or Red Delicious.
Jonagold and Gala are okay too - worth a try.
Here's a good link for apply tastes and uses. Best of luck deciding your fav!
GALA!
I like Galas and Fujis for eating out of hand, and Macintoshs if they are nice and fresh -- they get mealy fast. Honey Crisp are very nice when they are available. I'll buy Red Delicious if they are on sale -- the smaller ones taste a lot better than the huge ones. That's actually true of apples in general, I've noticed. Buy the bag of apples rather than buying them separately at the store -- they will be cheaper and the smaller ones taste better!
I recently bought a bag of "Acey Mac" apples that are very good. They are probably a Macintosh hybrid as they look like and have the texture of Macintoshs. They are very delicate, though, and I bet will go bad quickly, so I'm trying to eat them as fast as I can!
Of course, if you are baking or making applesauce, you want completely different apples than these. XD I mostly just eat them out of hand, so these are the ones I'm familiar with.
My fav is gala
Macintosh
You're right about Red "Delicious". They're so mealy and waxy, and they have absolutely no flavor. Unfortunately, you've picked a really bad time of year to get into apples. I know people see them all year at the market, but apples really are a seasonal food, and there's no comparing fall apples with the crappy substitutes offered in other times of year. I love apples, but I usually stop eating them around now, when berries start showing up in the market, and start again in September.
If you like Golden Delicious raw, more power to you, but those are baking apples. I think they're really bland raw, but when you bake them their true flavor comes through.
My favorite apple that you can get year-round is probably a Fuji. They're pretty reliable. My favorite fall apple for eating is the Honeycrisp, and my favorite for baking is the Newton Pippin.
I saw that you're in Virginia, and you should keep an eye out for Catoctin Mountain apples in the fall. They're grown in the Blue Ridges and have an amazing texture.
Sorry if I sound like an apple snob, but I live in Washington, and we get a little emotional about our apples. I hope everybody enjoys their apple of choice.
gala and golden delicious
oh i love all kinds haha...but my favorite are grapples! they like smell like grapes...kind of have a grapey taste too...but a crisp apple texture. I love them! they come in like 4 packs :)
Jazz apples are expensive but fantastic
Have you heard of Pink Ladies? They are now my favorite. I would compare it to the honey crisp. Crisp and sweet, yum. Check it out if they have them in your area. Julie Lane
gala, fuji, honey crisp and pink ladies! mmm. the crispier the better...
also, there is nothing better than an asian pear- it looks and tastes like a pear/apple hybrid. SO good (but a tad expensive)
FUJI <3
My all time favorite is Pink Lady's because they are really sweet, and really crisp and crunchy. I did find out recently that they are also called Cripps Pink in some stores.
I can't stand to eat a mealy apple, I had one yesterday and they just start to taste like dirt. I threw it away.
Fuji and galas all the way!!
I haven't tried a honey crisp, but from all the raves, I think I'll pick up a couple the next time I'm at the store.
santonacci, Honey Crisp are only available for a few weeks while they are in season, in the autumn. :c I think early October.
Edit: October is when they are in season in Maryland, at least! Might be different where you live. XD
