Apples! Favorite types!
When I got to college my roommate got me into Golden Delicious, which had a sweeter flavor, but were less firm.
A couple months ago a friend had me try the honey crisp, and they were firm and sweet, but not around often.
So now I'm on a quest to find the best tasting apple! I just tried a Braeburn and I didn't like it. It was too mealy for my tastes. Yesterday I tried a Fuji and it is by far my favorite so far. I still have a Jazz and a Rome at home to try. I don't like Granny Smiths at all, they're too sour.
Basically, I want to know what everyone's favorite apple is and why. Possibly help me along on my journey to find the best apple ever grown :)
Reason: Released as sticky
my favorite apples... empire is definitely #1. it's a cross between red delicious and mcintosh, but in my opinion it's more a crunchier, sweeter, juicier version of a mcintosh than anything near a red delicious (which i hate). and then there's pink lady, fuji, and granny smith and mcintosh when they're fresh and crunchy. i like crunchy, juicy apples, basically :)
I also really like ambrosia or the ones that are honey-something. (forget the name ;)
ABSOLUTELY empire apples, but pink ladies are moorish

So I'm just now starting to experiment with apples. As a kid my family bought Red Delicious and only Red Delicious. I think they have a nasty aftertaste.

honey crisp straight from the orchard. but like you said not always around. but definately worth the wait
but GALAS are definately my favorite.
thank goodness for apples, they are basically my new dessert when i am craving something sweet!
My favorites are Gala or Red Delicious apples! But they have to be hard and crisp... nothings worse when i bite into an apple and its all soft! yuck!
I love Galas ♥
I also enjoy Golden Delicious's, we had a tree at home :)
and
Spartans, but only fresh off the tree .
has anyone ever tried a grapple? you have to specially order them. Its an apple that tastes like a grape and they are seriously AMAZING it really does tast like grape its so funny.
I eat apples all day everday!!! Recently I have tried the Jonagold apples...there super huge and crisp and juicy. Cameo are also one of my favorites, they remind me of the honey crips which are by far the best apples I have EVER eaten. Because of the whole out of season thing...the Cameo really takes the place of them!
Red Delicious.
I've found that I need to keep them refrigerated, because they taste odd when they are room temp. When they're cold they are so crisp, so juicy and so sweet. They taste amazing with natural pb, too.
honeycrisp. Darn shame they're 3 times as much $$ as other apples.
I love Red Delicious and Granny Smith... but since you don't like those I would suggest trying Rome apples. They are dark red, very firm and mild tasting. Not really sour at all to me.
I just tried a Rome yesterday actually, and it was very mealy. I wasn't a big fan. I got two new types to try at the store last night, as well as a giant bag of fuji, as they are slowly becoming my new favorite food!
Only problem I have with them is they leave me too full for too long. I usually eat them at the end of the day with a cinnamon graham cracker to make a delicious dessert otherwise I'm not hungry for a couple hours and end up under-eating.
I like fresh Golden Delicious and Honey Crisps.
A lot of people gave the advice to buy them when they're in season, which is very good advice. I would add that you should try to buy from a local producer or orchard. You'll be stunned at how much better they taste than whatever is typically available at your local mega-supermarket.
Pink Lady, they're full of flavor.
When they're not in season, I go for the honey crisps. Fortunately, they have opposite seasons, so I'm not forced to choose something else. I eat an apple every day.
My trainer tells me the green Granny Smith apples are good for fat burning, but I can't bring myself to eat them

Gala apples. mmm team one of those up with a 60 cal caramel jello pudding snack and i'm in HEAVEN for at least 15 minutes :)
Oh...I forgot, I sprinkle a bit of key lime juice on my apple, as I core it and slice it up before I eat it.
I used to put sea salt on them, but since I'm cutting down on sodium, I switched to the key lime, which I have found I actually like a whole lot better!
