Apples! Favorite types!

Quote  |  Reply
So I'm just now starting to experiment with apples.  As a kid my family bought Red Delicious and only Red Delicious.  I think they have a nasty aftertaste.

When I got to college my roommate got me into Golden Delicious, which had a sweeter flavor, but were less firm.

A couple months ago a friend had me try the honey crisp, and they were firm and sweet, but not around often.

So now I'm on a quest to find the best tasting apple!  I just tried a Braeburn and I didn't like it.  It was too mealy for my tastes.  Yesterday I tried a Fuji and it is by far my favorite so far.  I still have a Jazz and a Rome at home to try.  I don't like Granny Smiths at all, they're too sour.

Basically, I want to know what everyone's favorite apple is and why.  Possibly help me along on my journey to find the best apple ever grown :)

Reason: Released as sticky

I also like lime or lemon juice on my apples.  My mom used to do it when I was a kid to keep them from browning in my lunchbox.  I also like dipping them in cinnamon, especially the juicy ones!

I love the following types -

Gala

Cameo

Pink Lady

Red Delicious

Apples I really dislike include Granny Smiths and Braeburns.

Based on what I've read here I think I'll have to try Fuji and Jazz (and Honey Crisps come October).

I'm with the Fujiians, for sure....Fujis are relaibly crisp. I hate biting into an apple an discovering it's mushy or mealy ew ew ew!! Fujis are safe. And delicious. I wish I had one right now!

Just an update - I tried Fuji and Golden Delicious over the weekend - not bad...but I think my favorites still are Gala, Cameo, Pink Lady/Cripps Pink and Red Delicious. I think Fuji and Golden Delicious come in behind those 4. I have a Jazz apple at home that I will try tonight.

I tried a sonya and a pacific rose this week.  The Sonya was very good, but also very sweet, with no tart undertones.  I would eat is as a dessert rather than as a snack.  The pacific rose was wonderfully crisp and a good sweetness, but had some of the bitterness in the skin that I don't like in the red delicious.  I would definately buy the Sonya again when I go to buy more Jazz and Fuji :)

*has anyone tried a cameo?

I bought a bag of Jazz on this thread's recommendation -- very good!  Thanks, guys!

My favorites (I eat an apple for lunch every day of the entire school year! LOL that's 185 apples) usually eat other fruit in the summer so I don't tire of them

Honey Crisp (only available a few weeks in the fall), Pacific Rose (can be pricey), Pink Lady, Gala and Jonagold

Yup I've tried Cameo apples. I quite like them. They can be very crisp, look awesome (they are the best looking apples from my list) and the taste is quite sweet - not as sweet as a Gala, no tartness - like for example ..have you tried a Pink Lady/Cripps Pink apple? While Pink Ladys can be sweet, they also have a tinge of sourness, not much but just a pinch...not so with the Cameos, they are mildly sweet, very crisp, no tartness.

Try one :-)

I tried a Gala yesterday...it was okay for a change but a little too golden-deliciousy for my taste...I like the little bit of tartness in the Fuji, I like Granny Smiths for that reason too though they require a serious mood for tartness!

I finally tried that Jazz apple, and I have to say it was delicious, very crunchy and juicy. Looks like Jazz will be entering regular rotation from now on.

I purchased a Pacific Rose apple last night to try it (also purchased 3 cripps Pink) - will let ya know what I think of it.

I tried a Cripps Pink today, but it was a little mealy.  I think I'll wait to find a Pink Lady at the store since those have quality regulations on them, and the cripps pink are the ones that don't cut it.

Oh! I didn't know Pink Lady apples have quality regulations and Cripps Pink don't!

Well guess what? I liked the Pacific Rose too...maybe I just need to say I like apples (with exceptions) and be done with it...hahaha

Yeah, I've been doing research on my apples as I've been trying. Work can be a little slow at times. Here's my favorite apple website:

Thanks for the link. Made for some interesting reading. Suprisingly that website does not seem to have any information about the Pacific Rose variety...or maybe it just skipped my attention. Very good reading nonetheless.

As an aside, I cannot seem to find any Sonya apples at jewel. Are Sonyas season specific?

Thanks

I oculdn't find the pacific rose either.  It's a UK website, so the breed might not have made it over there yet.  I'm not sure about the Sonya's.  I'm in the US East Coast and have found them in all our grocery stores, but the large ones are the ones that taste good while the small ones have been mealy.  Weird since that's the opposite of most fruits!

Bumping this thread just to get new comments...Cool anymore good apple discoveries/finds anyone?

Apples are and have always been my favourite food. First and foremost Granny Smiths, but I also love Gala and Fuji, occasionally Golden Delicious. Too bad my grocery store has such a conventional selection, I gotta wait a few more months until the apple trees at my parents' place yield their crop :) (We have like 9 trees).

I was kind of disheartened to weigh my beloved Granny Smiths and discover that even the really small ones can be around 150 grams, that's a lot of calories..

i love every single kind of apple on the market; but my favorite is golden delicious. :)

Eve - a large apple (2 to a pound, or 220 gm approx) is 110 calories, that sounds quite reasonable, no? The best 100 calorie snack to munch on imo

Erica - I love Golden Delicious apples too. But there are some types I avoid - Granny Smiths, Braeburns, Jonagold to name a few.
