Apples are just SO sweet

Quote  |  Reply

I used to be a junk food addict.  I still get a fair amount, though I've cut back.  But here's a nice thing:

I think I have a pretty weak sense of taste.  If there is a food I like, I usually like it no matter if it is homecooked or school lunch.  I like what I like.  Which is also why I've probably been able to eat extremely rich foods easily, and I really like strong flavors, like onions or bell peppers.  It's only spicy food I can't stand (but I'm trying to get accustomed for the sake of my Bangali friend).

I used to need a candy bar or cake or something to really taste the sweet.  Then, about a week ago, I was eating an apple.  And I realized something.  Apples are really sweet!  I am appreciating natural fruit sugar!

I've also learned to appreciate food in general WAY more.  I made myself some veggie sheperd's pie two days ago and as I ate leftovers, I really took time to explore the texture, actually delighting in the smooth muchrooms hidden in the dish.  It's such a delightful feeling!

Edited to add: Also, I definitely taste onions WAY more!  Like, it is a lot stronger to me now.  And I never used to eat bell peppers so I can't compare that, heh.

If you have a sweet tooth, can I suggest Jonagold apples?

They're SUPER sweet, nice crunch, firm flesh....perfect apple in my opinion. Clementines are a great fruit too, more tart than sweet.

Personally, I love the Gala apple...yum!

and apples are great if you dry them too. I just spent 3 days drying home grown apples for the winter months. They are sooooooo yummy! like nothing in our stores. Sweet and no artificial anything, also easy to keep!

Pink ladies are my fav.  Just the right amount of tart / sweet and they're nice and crunchy.  I also 2nd the reco for clementines -- just like cherry tomatoes, they're nature's little candies!

yum!

Don't get me started on cherry tomatoes!

I normally get any kind of green apply, which tends to be granny smith.  Green are my favourite- I like the sort of sourness of it.  Then yellow and my least favourite is red.  I'm no connoiseur of apples so I'll have to try/pay attention to other kinds.

I recently discovered the same thing about apples! Yellow are my favorite, then, red, then pink ladies and green are my least favorite unless they're in a pie!

Apples- OM NOM NOM!!

Hahaha, this made me laugh :P  "Apples are SWEET!"  I like Pink Ladies and Macs the best. Mmmmmmm.....

Isn't it a shame that we don't really take the time to really eat our food properly?  All too often we simply shovel it into our mouths to satisfy our stomach (or sometimes sense of timing, if you're eating just because it's lunch time) and we don't get to really enjoy the tastes and textures built into it.

If you treat yourself to chocolate from time to time, try some 85% or higher dark chocolate, and put a tiny piece in you mouth, and just let it melt reeeeally slowly.  I love the dark, fruity flavours that are in there, and the smooth, creamy texture!

Red delicous are good, but I've never tasted and apple as heavenly as a Honey Crisp. Sweet and juicey with lots of crunch.

I've noticed my tastes have also changed, since I stopped eating so much sugar I've really lost my taste for super sweet things (like frosting), and have started liking veggies so much more. Ditto with salt

when I was a kid, I would turn my nose up at most veggies, now I love them, and conversely a lot of the things I used to love, I don't like so much anymore.

I guess my tastes have finally grown up and matured.
