Approaching Flu Season

Quote  |  Reply

As flu season blankets us all, I've been trying to come up with ideas to fight against this contagious pain in the @$$, head, muscles, etc....plus other things that are common this time of year such as colds, sinus infections, etc. I've already started getting a few symptoms of what I think is a sinus infection, but I'm trying to attack it first before it gets bad. I've gotten these things many times in the past, but when they get me down....I'm DOWN for the count for days and days.

Anyway, I thought it might be a good idea if we all started sharing ways of preventing some of this stuff, other than the obvious flu shot. My daughter got her first shot a few days ago, and she's supposed to get a second one in about a month. I'm debating on getting one, because I know it'd be a good idea, but I've always ended up sicker after the flu shot instead of just not getting one. I don't know why that is.

One of the ways I try to prevent myself from getting sick is to cook with extra garlic. I love making things like chili and spaghetti because it's EASY to just dump a bottle (not really) of garlic and not taste it as much (for those I cook for who hate the taste of it). But I'm wondering if it would be safe and a good idea to add garlic to my 8-month-old's diet too, or if I should hold off. Let's share ideas!!

The garlic might be hard for her to digest, and since she got the flu shot, she's probably pretty safe.  I haven't gotten a flu shot for the same reason that you haven't, they seem to make me sicker.

I dont do flu shots and probably will never do them.  As for the garlic, I started adding it to my babies homemade food at age 7 months.  Also added parsley, basil, cumin and almost any other spice except salt.

spuckine,

my baby is going on 6 months at the end of this month and we will start one foods then, i did read that you should start introducing spices early.  my question is are you adding them to the store bought foods or do you make your own baby food?  I have been debating on how i wanted to start, let me know...thanks

purpleldy,

I know your post wasn't directed at me, but I just wanted to put my 2 cents in in case it helps. I started my daughter on the jarred foods because I have such busy schedules. However, I put my schooling on hold for a while to give myself more free time, so now I make my daughter's foods. I still buy the jarred foods for more on-the-go reasons when I won't have access to a refridgerator, but for the most part, when I cook for myself, I share it with Maddison. I bought a baby food grinder that really helps with that, but I don't add condiments to her portions. Also, after her and I have eaten and I still have some left over, I portion out one more meal for her in a smaller container before putting the rest away, that way it's easier for me to just grab and stick in her diaper bag when I'm in a hurry.

purpleldy,

I made all my food for my three kids and also for the daycare kids that start with me as well.  Im in Canada so the daycare kids are 1 yr old.

I also started them on food earlier then what the guidelines are suggesting.  I went with my gut and my doc was fine with that.

I didnt buy any fancy toys, just my braun hand blender and a juice jug to grind the food into a puree.  Then I would put the food into the ice cube tray, freeze and put in ziploc bag.

I started with an easy fruit like apples then went to a veggie.  I usually alternated this until 4-5 fruits and veggies were being eaten on regular basis.  But since I started my kids at 4 months it was much easier to tackle the fussy phase that usually happens around 8 months.  The spices came at around 7 months when I started making meals and freezing them in the same manner.

Ladies,

Thank you both for responding and for your great tips.  akitty62, I am leaning toward what you are doing since i have a busy schedule some days and prepackaged would really come in handy.  I love to cook as well so I can do both.  But again thanks for all the help from both of you, I am looking forward to him getting his first bite.
