Arc Trainer Burn

Quote  |  Reply

Hello!

I have been reading that the arc trainer utilizes the larger muscle groups of the body therefore allowing you to burn an exceptional amount of calories- I burn 1,050 in one hour on hill interval level 5- I would really like this to be accurate as I am upping my calorie intake on the days I do this to keep that 1000 deficit, and obviously do not want to over eat if the number would be wrong (or under eat!)

Anyone have any thoughts if this is a safe calorie burn total to go by? I have to put in my weight into the machine but no age. I am 25, 5'5", 174 lbs

PS I have done searches in the archives for this and can't seem to find a thread of what I am looking for!

Thanks for any feedback you may have!

I use a heart rate monitor at the gym, and I get the same burn on the arc trainer as I do on the elliptical. It also feels exactly the same too. As with everything the burn rate is determined by how hard you push yourself. I burn the most calories when I circuit train and I know this because I'm literally gasping for air and I sound like I'm hyperventilating.

I use a heart rate monitor also, my stats are 5 ft 4 in 138 lbs and I burn a little over 700 cal in 1 hour at a level 3 hill on the arc trainer.  I think close to a thousand is a safe bet for you.  I don't like the ellipticals because I don't feel like it allows me to hit a full stride.

Without a HRM and doing a proper fit/field test to get your MHR..there is no way to tell. Despite putting in your weight//and even ones that have you put in weight AND age...a person will not get a reliable read out. Your heart fitness can be completely different than someone your same age/weight and height.

Someone is feeding you a line of BS about the arc trainer. At your size, you would have to be running the equivalent of 8 miles an hour (7:30 mile) to burn that many calories. If you can do that, than it might be true, but I still doubt it. The Arc Trainer is not that effective.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I do think I am going to get a heart rate monitor to make sure, but looks like I have a good thing going, whether burning that many calories or not. Still losing at a good pace (1.5 to 2 lbs) a week. If that changes then I will lower or raise my cals accordingly. Its too bad the machines can't be more accurate! Thanks again, and have a great day everyone!
