Aren't you happy we dont have to worry about Listeriosis?

All my meat-eating friends are freaking out right now, and I'm relaxing in smug satisfaction knowing that I dont have to worry!

I'd say karma is at play here.

You know, I don't usually post in this forum, but this sort of attitude is precisely why vegetarians and vegans get so much 'tude from meat eaters.

Live and let live, eh? Your personal choices are no better than anyone else's.

do you eat cheese, sarahgordon?  because they found it in cheese yesterday.

edit: and how do you rationalize salmonella in spinach, huh?  is that karma, too?

oh - and hk: yeah.

I knew there was a reason why I originally harbored issues against vegetarians before coming to this site. I'm starting to remember it.

Since the bacteria that causes listeriosis is found in soil and water I'm pretty sure its still possible for you to get the disease as well, even if it is a lower possibility.

Yeahhhhhhhhh nooooo... they found it in cheese too, as already stated.

I don't care as much because I'm more of a live and let live kind of person, but my vegan friend would probably rip you a new one for perpetuating the stereotype that veg*ns are all smug uppity people that think they are better than everyone else.

No, I dont eat cheese.

And I'm all about live and let live - letting animals live free lives. In the interests of animals and the planet, I want to spread word about the various benefits of veganism to as many people as possible, and I'll risk offending meat-eaters through that process.

There have been outbreaks of salmonella and E.Coli in produce too, I acknowledge that - however, abstaining from the consumption of animal products does lessen ones odds of obtaining an illness.
sarahgordon, i know, and i totally agree with you! teehee :)
Why would anyone be glad that others are in pain? Isn't that what veganism is all about? Lessening the suffering of animals and people?
I never said I was glad that others were in pain.

I said I was happy that as a non-meat eater it wasn't something I had to be concerned about. And hopefully it will make more people question the dangers of factory farming and where their meat comes from. Unfortunately it often seems to take a tragedy for people to open their eyes and start questioning things.

Honestly the only times I've ever been sick, save for once, after eating were the times I bit into a rotting apricot and tried to eat some veggies that were going bad. Only once did I have undercooked pork, and of course never went to that restaurant again.

So I guess I'm terribly sorry my meat eating habits haven't given me horrible omfgwtfbbq parasites.

It's about lessening the suffering of animals, not necessarily people. Agreed, though, no need to act "holier than thou", man.

I agree with most of the people on here. If you want to be vegetarian/vegan that's your choice, but it doesn't make you better than anyone else.

As for being vegan.. if we didn't milk cows.. I think they're utters would start to, you know, hurt, so what's the problem with dairy?

I can see where vegetarians come from but vegan's I just don't understand.

The human being is an omnivore, as are many bears, birds, and pigs.  I'm sure you wouldn't begrudge a bird to eat a grasshopper.  Everyone has a right to make their own choices, and I totally support your right to eat whatever you want.  I do believe that factory farming is horrible to animals -- and the food that is produced through such practices is lacking in integrity and nutritional value, as well as the cause for most outbreaks of Listeriosis, MadCow, and Avian Influenza.  But if someone wants to eat a BigMac, I say have at it.  Enjoy!

Cows over-produce milk because we bred them that way. Do you seriously believe human beings were meant to wander over to a random animal and start drinking its milk? Would you find it natural for a raccoon to start sucking at your tit?

I have no problems with animals who need to eat meat eating meat. While humans can eat meat, many of us who have access to sufficient plant protein (which is all of us in the First World, plant protein is cheaper than animal protein anyway), dont need to eat meat- therefore since physical necessity is no longer a justification for the consumption of animal products, one who chooses to consume animal products needs (IMO) to develop an ethical or environmental justification.

Lions cant go to the grocery store and buy a can of beans, they have to eat animals. Its not at all comparable to humans.

i noticed in your profile that you have a weakness for processed foods.  the listeriosis outbreak has far more to do with food processing than it does with factory farming.

but i'm sure the families of the nine dead and dozens sick will be comforted by the fact that you feel safe.

Karma isn't at play.
You should be just as concerned as any meat eater.
You can still get salmonella.

This is not going to "make people question the dangers of factory farming and where their meats are coming from."
It's occurring in things other than just meat, remember???

Besides that, you're just cruel...

Boy i sure could MURDER a rare steak right about now...

there wouldnt be diesese in meat products if the damn usda didnt let those massive meat companys screw up our food supply and torture and exploit thier animals with hormones, soy based feed and dirty pens.

im not a veegatarian, but i strongly support local, raw, and grass fed animal products. They are simply great for you. ive never gotten sick from my friends raw grass fed cow milk. but i garentee i would if i drank raw milk from some mass cow plant in ohio.

the animal industry in this country and indeed the entire world is stupid and a damn shame.

i don't think it's cause for any smugness. i'm vegan and i don't get all superior feeling when there are meat recalls. i'm worrying about my friends and family who may have ingested contaminated food.

Ever heard of vitamin B12?  It only comes from animal products, and it's vital for human survival.  I don't know how long you've been vegan, but most long-term vegans need synthetic B12 shots.

How 'natural' (bull, by the way) is it to get a shot of chemicals?
