Aren't people amusing?

Quote  |  Reply

So I went to the grocery store yesterday to pick up a few things I needed (soy milk, granola bars, eggs, yogurt, cocoa powder... haha okay I guess I didn't really need that last one ;P ) and was quite entertained by the man behind me in the checkout line. My favorite thing to do when I'm shopping is to scope out what other people are buying, and this particular guy had decided to eliminate his beer belly by purchasing:

  • 1 HUGE box of Pixie Sticks (that artificially flavored sugar-in-a-paper-tube candy)
  • Trix cereal (the big family-sized box)
  • 3 cases of Bud Light
  • A bottle of some cranberry margherita drink mix in heavy syrup form
  • 2 packages of the fattiest red meat I have ever seen in my life
  • A gigantic box of weight loss "magic one-week diet" pills

I just find it so amusing that so many people believe that they can eat whatever they want as long as they're faithfully taking their magical diet pills. Then again I suppose it's actually sort of sad that they don't know any better...

What interesting combinations of items have you seen people buying?

I haven't had pixie stix in forever...! I want some now! And Trix isn't that bad, it's about 100-110cals a cup.

But yeah, people are terribly uninformed and it doesn't help that companies continue to release these ridiculous things.

low calorie should not be the indicator of whether or not something is "good" or "bad". the fact that those 100-110 calories are basically all sugar is what makes it a less than optimal choice or "bad" but i love sweet cereals...haha

I prefer to focus on what I'm buying at the supermarket instead of staring into peoples' carts and negatively judging them. It's not my business what they buy.

i think the bud light says it all. ewww

Perhaps the "diet pills" were for his significant other -- more women than men buy into the quick fix trap -- he may not actually give a flying rat's **** what he looks like.

And why would you be remotely embarrassed at buying cocoa powder? (based on your "haha okay I guess I didn't really need that last one ;P" )

silly rabbit! trix are for kids! i bet the pixie stix are for the kid(s) too.

me loved me some pixie stix back in the day... anyone remember the giant pixie stix? those were unmitigated sugary awesomeness...

margarita mix for wifey - and like coach k said - the diet pills too.

the beer is for him and his buddies, and the meat is for dinner - his pick.

haha

Not that it's any of my business what's in someone else's cart, but neither are good choices for kids either.

I was at the supermarket a few weeks ago and saw a bloke with 8 huge cabbages, six pineapples and 2 dozen cans of sweetcorn in his trolley.

I really couldn't help but wonder what he was planning for dinner!

yeah i bet their kids' teeth are all rotted out. Laughing

*ahem*

not that its any of my business of course. Undecided

the funniest combination I've seen was a guy a few years ago, buying chocolate, flowers, Midol and condoms.

I think its pretty self explanatory.

He was a good looking 20 somethingish guy too

I try my best not to pass judgements, but sometimes it is fun to people watch and play junior behavior analysist. One never knows if a person is buying for themselves or someone else, and there is always way more to the story, but it still says alot about a person.

Or maybe I've just watched too many episodes of Criminal Minds.

I also tend not to really notice/ judge what people are buying at the grocery store.

However I will say that I worked as a cashier at a drug store for about 2 years, and I can't tell you how common it was to see people buying candy, candy, more candy, chips, chocolate, and like, Hydroxycut.

I do notice what other people are buying, mostly just in front of me... and I always feel so bad for the guy buying only hungry man dinners and beer Cry I so want to say "Come to my house I will cook you food!"

I only notice what people are buying if my groceries are less healthy than theirs.  And I have had many days where the majority of my purchases are junk so I can't get too sanctimonious about it.

I find it amusing that so many people can go through life with blinders on, each having their own set of illogical beliefs or opinions which they will fanatically defend.

It's like someone buying a double whopper, large fries, and a diet coke from Burger King. maybe they just enjoy the taste of diet coke more...

I mean, I know I shouldn't ever judge people, but it's human nature. xD So yeah, I notice other people's carts. I can't think of any stand out incidents though. Yours is amusing. ^_^

On the flip side, I worry people are judging my weight and cart at the grocery store, which prompts me to always buy healthy stuff.

Since when has sugar become evil? D:

Come over to my house to play with my 9 year old son about 20 minutes after he's had some Dr. Pepper or Halloweeen candy and you can find out.  I'll even supply the protective gear and/or bandages.

on edit:  but I'll insist on you signing a waiver...

Hehehehehe, maybe I should rephrase my statement. Since when has sugar become evil to adults? :P

As to the whopper meal + diet coke, maybe they're watching their calories, but still want that meal so they give up the cals from the soda. I've done that (not had a whopper meal though but still). Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. :P

That or regular coke gives them toothaches.
