Omg it's "LOSE" people, not "LOOSE"!!!! You want to lose weight, not loose it! I am about to tear my hair out!
/rant over
Hey, hey, losen up.
;D
lol I know - it's petty, but bad spelling, grammar, and/or too much text speak......just really irritates me.
And this is one of the more common offenses.
You wanna know what makes me want to tear my hair out?
When people post a new topic, without checking to see if there is already a thread about the same damn thing already out there.
Eh there are way more important things in the world to worry about. Everyone has a right to be here, and I am sure that you know what they are trying to say, so what's the big deal?
Oh, I agree, kukua. And I can understand one or two mistakes (I am no perfect speller myself) but repeatedly... yeah.
There are actually a few threads on this subject already. ![]()
- Tired of the atrocious grammar/spelling
- Spelling Pet Peeve
- Common Spelling Errors
- Spelling - Loose vs. Lose
- Grammar/Spelling Pet Peeves!
- Pet peeves!!!
- Loose vs Lose
- The correct word is "lose" NOT "loosed"
- I'm sorry, but it has to be done: EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS about grammar
- Pet Peeve!!!!!!
I am sure there are more out there but this is what came up with a quick search.
I'm sorry for annoying everyone with a repeat post - I'm not an idiot, and I know how to search for topics. I knew there were other posts out there - I was just ranting.
I guess I didn't realize a repeat post was such an issue. Won't happen again.
hahahahaha
You'd think people would get the spelling right by now!
Didn't you know that poor spelling and grammar are A-OK, but repetitiveness is a mortal sin?
Being an English teacher, I've actually considered starting a spelling and grammar thread here. It wouldn't be a rant, and it wouldn't be used to embarrass other people. It would simply be an on-going thread with examples of errors that I come across and their corrections with names omitted, of course. Obvious accidental errors and brain-farts would be ignored. I certainly make my share!
What do you guys think of that idea?
EDIT TO ADD: I also wouldn't include all those numbers and shortcuts since they're not actually mistakes They're just the new slang.

Personally I'd like that very much (I am a "spelling policeman" myself, although obviously I make a lot of mistakes too), but I have a feeling i may be a minority here.
Ha ha... I'd just read the recent forum posts and thought the exact same thing lol
But anyhoo, as long as you can read it, does it really matter? Sometimes yes it does but here's hardly a formal letter or something.
Although, I hate it when I recieve a text thats all numbers and few letters to shorten it!
Brainfarts lmao, I haven't heard that in a looooong while....
Edit to add* On msn I usually write things the way I'd say them to help convey the meaning... Fer (for) usually comes up alot... or tother (the other) etc etc

No one said you were an idiot or implied that you were. The point of me showing you other threads on the topic was so that you would know that you weren't the only one who felt this way.
Personally, the short text talk is more troublesome for me to read.
I teach my students, you "lose" an "o"; that seems to help. Spelling "lose" as "loose" (rhymes with noose) is a very common mistake! I know; it drives me nuts too, but you gotta love the poster who said, "Losen up!!" hahaha.
Hi Kukua,
You have my sympathy.
The awful truth is that you can't change the world.

The lose/loose thing really bugs me. The only thing that keeps me from going nuts is thinking about what the writer intended and what they are actually saying. I went to a basketball game recently where the cheerleaders (led by their English teacher!) had created a poster stating that the other team would "loose". I kept picturing the other team all relaxed and jello like...
Here's what should be done: If you can't spell "lose" correctly, no driver's license for you.
Perhaps that's too light of a negative enticement...
Given the type of people that use "loose" instead of "lose," perhaps a ban from Wal-Mart would be in order...
(I'm sorry, but I'm getting brake work done today on my car and I'm a little surly this morning)
The loose/lose thing bugs me to no end. However, the other thing that bugs me is nutso repeat-post policewomen. This isn't Wikipedia... I mean, if you're on here for some fact that someone might have posted before (how many cals in 1.5 pistachios, what does my 'burn meter' mean), search before you post.
However, these forums are for support as much as for information, so if you need to vent, share, whine, holler, or brag, repeats are never ever an offense, because even if this forum has heard from someone saying something similar before, they haven't heard it from YOU!
Finally, someone who can't spell "lose" is never ever going to do a search to make sure they are spelling it correctly (and even if they did, they'd get plenty of confirming entries for "loose" to keep them on the wrong path), so I am happy to see someone post a reminder rant every month or so. No wrong here.
Wow... pms? Hunger pains?

Exactly! I'm irritated by people who are irritated by repeat posts. Some of us here are fairly new and don't post in one forum all the time. Give it a rest! Of course there will be repeat topics. Come on-- how many unique topics can you create about the subject of weight loss and calorie counting? If you're not interested in a repeat thread, damnit don't read it.
Poor grammar and spelling also gets to me. In fact, I recently sent a note to my children's school principal because an email was sent with her signature with some very obvious errors. She wrote back saying the district sent it; to which I responded, if I were her and in the business of educating children I wouldn't want my name attached to any such poorly written message. Several hours later, a new note came around to the parents apologizing for the grammar errors. But they still left one error there anyway. Sigh. First she tried to say it wasn't her responsibility, then, she didn't even correct it properly.
Personally, I think poor spelling and grammar (sans the occasional typo) makes an otherwise smart person sound stupid. And more, shucking the responsibility away doesn't make it any better (this is just a message board, just a note to my kids, etc.) Again, I'm not talking about occasional goofs, but constant and persistent misuse of words and conventions.
HAHAHAHA!
wow, thats exactly how it is with me!!! I'm all types of OCD when it comes to spelling and grammar mistakes
Where can I see 1/8th or 1/6th of a pie or angel food cake?
This is the best way to picture a portion of pie or cake: Draw a circle to represent the circumference of the cake or pie (9" pie? 10" cake?... Read more
