Eat Healthier on the Go

You can still eat on-the-go if you're losing weight. It just takes a little planning and some smarts about ordering ... use these tips!

    A Better Burger

  • Order a regular hamburger like those that come in a kids meal. It will save you tons of fat and calories over a quarter-pounder loaded with cheese, sauce and extra meat.
  • Delis are a "Do" and Subs can be Smart

  • Delis and sub shops can be a boon to weight loss. Choose sandwiches with boiled or broiled meats such as lean roast beef, turkey, chicken breast, or lean ham. If the bread is thick, remove the top and cut the bottom lengthwise and use one half as the top.
  • Hold the...

  • If you do order regular menu items at a burger joint, make sure it's without toppings, sauces, or mayonnaise. These "extras" can cost hundred of calories. Instead, add flavor with mustard and layer on the veggies for fiber, crunch, and flavor.
  • Side Salads are Smart

  • A side salad is an excellent way to eat veggies at a fast food meal. They're easy on the wallet, too. Just be sure to watch out for high-fat toppings like regular dressings, bacon bits, cheeses, etc. If you know your salad "comes with" these items, ask them to be omitted. Always order your choice of low-cal or reduce-fat dressing on the side so it's up to you how much you use.
  • Don't do a Double

  • If you're going to order from the regular menu, keep portion control in mind and stay away from double cheeseburgers or foot long hot dogs. Treating yourself "regular" fast food will shoot your dieting efforts in the foot if you basically end up eating enough for two visit in one fell swoop by eating these "doubled" portions.
  • Pizza Shop Pointers

  • Believe it or not, the pizza shop can be diet-friendly. A salad bar with lots of frush veggies is often on offer. You could also have pizza in small servings if you're smart about the toppings. One slice can easily be cut into two. And a great option for dieters is the "vegetarian" pizza the shop offers. Try thin crust -- less carbs and calories -- and it's lighter than regular pizza so you won't get that afternoon slump.
