Q. What Are the Types of Heat Disorders?

Heat and humidity effect all runners. It helps to condition yourself to them, but even the most conditioned runner needs to be aware of heat disorders, the symptoms, the causes, and what to do in the event of an attack.

A.

There are three classifications of heat disorders:

Heat Cramps

Heat cramps are sudden, painful cramps or spasms. Heat cramps primarily effect the arms, legs, and/or stomach. They are not dangerous, but are a sign of worse things to come. Ignoring heat cramps often leads to heat exhaustion.

Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion is a more serious disorder. Its symptoms include feeling dizzy, weak, nauseous, and even becoming faint. Often the victim will have an increased heart rate and their skin will feel cool and clammy. Ignoring heat exhaustion leads to heat stroke.

Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is a medical emergency and should be treated thusly. It can cause death. Symptoms include flushed red skin, difficulty breathing, headaches, dizziness, burning sensations in the extremities, disorientation, lack of perspiration (sweating), vomiting, and losing consciousness.
