artificial sweeteners... making me sick?
Has anyone else had this experience? I used to use splenda in coffee and tea all the time, chew sugar free gum and drink the occasional diet coke without ever feeling sick. Lately though even if I ingest a small amount of it it wrecks my digestive system. Anyone else had this happen or had bad reactions to artificial sweetners?
I just started using Stevia in coffee without side effects..
anyone?
Me me!!! Splenda gives me stomach cramps. I stopped using it and went back to sugar for a while. Recently gave up the sugar for Stevia and I love it!
I wrote a journal entry many weeks ago complaining about nausea. I had switched from Sweet N Low to Equal. I have about 5 packets a day (Coffee and Oatmeal) and for many days after starting Equal I would have nausea. I am pretty sure it was something in Equal, because I "tested" everything else I was putting into my body.
I now use Splenda and have tried Stevia, but Stevia has a "funky" taste to me. Splenda seems to be fine and I have not had issues since. Personally, I would love to completely get away from "fake" sugar, but then I guess if you have one vice and this is it, it probably will be okay.
i personally have no illness problems with artificial sweeteners, but i've heard of others who get very sick - so it is possible.
i used to consume tons of the stuff in diet cola, sugarfree gum, yogurt, juices, jam, sugarfree jello/pudding and whatever else.. but now i don't eat any of that stuff except for yogurt, and the kind i buy is naturally sweetened.
artificial sweeteners have always given me a headache and stomachache
i detest artificial sweeteners. i recommend stevia extract. it's a natural plant derivative. it scores so low on the glycemic index it's actually safe for diabetics. it also has a tonifying effect on the pancreas, which is the organ responsible for regulation of blood-sugar, and it aids in digestion. it is calorie-free. word of caution: it is VERY powerful stuff, about 30 times as sweet as sugar. go for the white stuff containing at least 90% steviosides. the green stuff has too much of an aftertaste. the taste is a little different. you probably don't want to use a lot of it for a really sweet taste, but it is great in coffee & tea and some baked goods. here's a link to a site with some info about it. http://www.stevia.net/
another word of caution: this site sells the stuff for a rather inflated price. it can be found in powder form for significantly less. the purer the form, the less aftertaste.
