How can I avoid overeating while fasting for Ramadan?
Asked by palipride47 on Jun 26, 2008 in Weight Loss

Since I am Muslim, my religion requires me to fast during Ramadan (which will be during the month of Sept this year). The fast prohibits eating and drinking anything from sunrise till sunset. How can I avoid overeating when sunset arrives, and what kind of breakfast will best prepare me for the fast by keeping me full?

Answer

Fast in the spirit of Ramadan to avoid overeating.  Your suhur (pre-dawn breakfast) and iftar (small meal to break the fast) should contain liquids, fruit and starch in Ramadan tradition. Prevent overeating at dinner by eating mindfully and focusing on your comfort level. The Prophet's Golden Rule of One-Third applies here: when eating, fill the stomach with one-third food, one-third liquid and one-third air. Avoid temptation after dinner by going to the mosque and reading the Quran.  Use the month to connect with God to experience the true benefit of fasting
