I have been told I am a candidate for diabetes due to PCOS. What do I need to eat or not eat to lose my fat and to prevent myself from being a diabetic in the future. I am 28 years old, never had a child, and all my fat is in the midsecton. I am asked all the time when my baby is due :-(
Answer
You can manage PCOS and prevent diabetes through diet and exercise. To reduce abdominal fat, lose weight by decreasing your calorie intake and increasing your exercise. Use the Calorie Target calculator in the Tools section to find your daily allowance. You need a diet low in refined starches and sugars, with most of your carbohydrates from unrefined grains, beans and vegetables with skins and seeds. At the end of the day, your total carbohydrate should be 40–55% of total calories. A high fiber intake along with 60 minutes of daily exercise has been shown to selectively decrease excess abdominal fat. Also keep your diet low in saturated fat because PCOS is linked to heart disease.
