What does it take to get out of "starvation mode"?
Asked by juliya on Jun 27, 2008 in Weight Loss

I am 33, 5'4" and 145 pounds. I've been following a low calorie diet for years (1000-1200), then something happened, and I started gaining weight (+15 pounds).  So after reading about starvation mode, I figured that's what I had, and so I increased my intake to 1500/day and I gained 5 more pounds.  It's been almost 4 months and my weight isn't moving.  How much longer do I have to wait?  Do I need to increase calories even more? I exercise almost everyday too (swimming, spinning, running).

Answer

During “starvation mode” the body adapts to a negative calorie balance by expending less energy than would be predicted. There is no simple explanation for the phenomenon, which has many causes and can last for an indefinite period of time.  You can manke changes in your diet and exercise routine, but for you, 1500 calories is ideal, just choose high fiber, low fat foods.   However, you can change the way you exercise by lifting weights and doing interval training. Exercise at least four times a week and become very active in your day-to-day life.
