I work out but my weight doesn't drop. Why?
Asked by arooker on Apr 10, 2008 in Weight Maintenance

I've been working out for almost 3-yrs doing spinning, boxing, and weight training.  I lose inches but my weight doesn't change.  I'm 5'5",  African American and I've had a foot surgery that slowed me down, but I am confused why my weight doesn't drop. I have the worse time finding clothes to fit, especially pants.

Answer

Loosing inches means you're gaining muscle, and since muscle weighs three times as much as fat, gaining muscle is a reason why you are not losing weight.  Also, your body might have adjusted to your exercise routine, and now it needs a push to burn more calories.  You can change your activites to new one that use different muscle groups, or change the intensity and frequency of your program.  The Exercise Guide at About.com writes about weight loss dilemmas like yours.
