So, I eat asparagus a couple times a week- I love the stuff!

I noticed today that eating asparagus my urine smells different- it's a strong unusual odor.

Do you experience this?

I've been eating it for months...and this is the first time I've noticed.  Just thought I'd share.  Laughing

Asparagus contains an amino acid called asparagine....its not harmfull!

but i dont know too much else about it.......other than the odour it gives off hehe...and that you should keep eating your asparagus!!:P

heh. Trust me, I'm not going to stop! It's like my favorite vegetable.  Just wondering why it happened this time...but, not before.  Weird.
Try beet pee it's super fun.
pink pee?
Go read Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas by Tom Robbins. Asparagus pee comes up in that.
i'm really surprised you never noticed before, danielle.  it's pretty universal!

I never had asparagas pee until my late thirties!  Some people can process that amino acid and most can't, thus the smelly pee.  I HATE that smell!!  I always think it follows me out of the bathroom and people can smell it.

Nope NEVER before! Maybe my senses are stronger now though...I havent smoked a cigarette in days.

From Wikipedia

The effect of eating asparagus on the urine of some people has long been known. Marcel Proust claimed that asparagus "...transforms my chamber-pot into a flask of perfume." Certain constituents of asparagus are metabolized giving urine a distinctive smell due to various sulfur-containing degradation products, including various thiols, thioesters, and ammonia.[16] Derivatives of asparagusic acid are also found in urine. The speed of onset of urine smell has been estimated to occur within 15-30 minutes of ingestion.[17] It has been claimed that most people produce the odorous compounds after eating asparagus, but only about 40% of the population have the autosomal genes required to smell them.

The only reason I bring up this old thread was because I was going to ask about it but found this and thought I'd share.
