Hi everyone. Im in a Portuguese studies class and my assignment this week is to talk about what the world's perception of Portuguese people are. So I figured I would come on here and ask what you think about Portuguese people, or what have you heard about them (good or bad). Please include where you are from (at least the country). Thanks in advance.

Honestly, when you say "Portuguese" I think of Brazil.  I don't know a lot about Portugal.  :)  Kelly
Sorry to be so ignorant. I think of Oporto (its a chicken place, which sells 'authentic' potuguese flavoured chicken). I feel TERRIBLE. I may just go out and research portugal. Also, I think of my friend eddy, who is portugeuese. He's so cool.
Would you post your findings/assignment (or excepts, if you're not allowed to) up here just so I can see?
I come from Australia and I've never heard anything bad about them. Other coutnries get a bad rap sometimes, but not Portugal
I think of all the explorers in history, of sunshine and beautiful coastlines, and of warm people, and of their amazing food.
I am from Massachusetts and I think of Fall River- a town where many Portugese people live. I think of colorful houses and of food with a special soup I once had and a nice wine from there...
My opinion won't count b/c I'm born and raised in Portugal.
I just wanted to say... PORTUGAL RULZ =)

There's a lot of stereotypes people have of the Portuguese, but usually that's near portuguese communities. Outside of that, people have rarely thoughout about the portuguese.
I still think of Ronaldo in the World Cup and his endless diving antics in the English Premiership.... ;)

I also think of Sportling Lisbon that gave my home team Middlesbrough a good kicking in the UEFA cup a few years back :)

Oh...., and England being knocked out of Euro 2004 on penalties by the Golden Age.
One of my favorite authors is Portuguese (Jose Saramago - "Blindness" is on my all time favorite books list).  I don't really have any impression of Portuguese people, but I would love to go to Lisbon for a visit!
I don't have any stereotypes about Portuguese either... I, too, just typically think of Brazil since they speak portuguese there...
I am originally from Brasil and when i think of the Portuguese I just think about how they always put the  ( shhh) sound in their words when they speak. That's how they talk in Rio to though.

I also know that some Brasilians usually have an attitude about the Portuguese kind of like the same way that some Americans have an attitude about English people. that probably makes no sense. Pretty much we changed a lot from when we seperated from them and we think we are better. I grew up in America so I don't really have these feelings, but growing up i think that's how i remember people talking about them!
thanks so much to everyone who replied, especially melika80 who gave me a Brazilian view. I was wondering if you knew of any jokes that Brazilians have about the Portuguese?

Also for everyone else, do you guys know of any stereotypes that exist about the Portuguese or any general views of the Portuguese that exist around where you live. Thanks again!
I remember a brazilian joke about a company in Brazil receiving a shipment of matches from Portugal, opening it and they were all used. When they call the portuguese company asking what was going on, they get the reply "well, we had to test them of course." Something like that =|

There's A LOT of them though... I know a lot of brazilians and they tell me how much they go off on the portuguese in jokes. They actually thought we did that about them, but the portuguese make fun of themselves (well the Alentejanos, a specific region in portugal) in jokes.

A common stereotype is that we're really cheap and hate to spend money. Loud, large families, hairy (I've actually had someone ask me if it's true that European women don't shave...), hard workers (that's a positive one =)), very patriarchal... believe men work and are the boss, while women stay in the kitchen, etc.
