Useless? A good starting point?

I started doing pullups in July after reading about how "good" they are supposed to be. At first I could only manage a couple but am up to 8 now. As I could do more than one at a time I just did 2 sets once a week on the unassisted bar and would follow up with a few negatives when I couldnt pull myself up any more. I think the assisted machines are good though to get you to the stage where you can lift your own weight. am really looking forward to being able to add some additional weight and this keeps me motivated on pullups day (monday), cos they really are quite mentally challenging.
