I'm an ex-competitive athlete.
I'm wondering if there are any other athletes out there who have retired from their sport?
How are you managing your weight/food/exercise? It's hard for me and I'm not doing that well at it. I'm very "heavy" and I'd like to get rid of some of my bulging muscles in favor of some longer, leaner muscles that don't have to be able to squat 250lbs...but so far, things aren't going well. AND i was on a broken scale for about a week without realizing it! :(
I didn't retire from my sport, but I did leave it for about 20 years (actually more). That's pretty much how I ended up at the weight I was -- I continued to eat like I was swimming 12000-15000 meters a day... And I don't have Michael Phelps' body.
What sport were you in?
I have gone back to competitive swimming, I also bike. Basically, I exercise, which I had stopped doing, and I try to eat a fairly clean diet (I'm but who can really live without Oreos???).
Since you are already strong, try leaning your muscles out with Yoga. I don't mean meditative yoga but Ashtanga or any other "sport" or power yoga. Don't give up. Getting out of shape after working so long at being in shape can be very depressing.
I was a swimmer too! I just swam at Olympic Trials and i'm done with competitive swimming for now. I was a sprinter so I'm quite muscular. I am buying a bike so I can start doing that, running is too hard on my wobbly swimmer's joints. I think I'll eventually return to swimming, but I want a little time off for now.
Thanks for the yoga tip, i will try that out when i join a gym this week (i just moved).
Well -- congratulations!
And I can totally understand wanting to take some time off. More so, I can understand the swimmer's wobbly joints (nobody believes I have floppy ankles), and the no running thing...
Pilates, yoga, long walks will help -- but the biggest transition will be the food, the types and amounts. I saw your weight and height from your previous posting -- it's a healthy weight, it won't be easy to take any off. Just saying. Good luck, regardless.
What type of food should not be eaten?
Calorie Count does not prescribe a particular diet or tell people to avoid particular foods. We only ask that you eat a balanced diet... Read more
