How can I avoid binge eating?
Asked by anonymous on Apr 13, 2008 in Eating Disorders

I have been suffering from binge eating disorder for 9 years. I've tried programs, but the tips that have been suggested to me (journaling, counseling) don't help me when I have an episode. Do you know any ways to stop yourself when the urge strikes?

Answer

When a craving hits, switch into the mindfulness meditation mode and use “urge surfing” until the craving passes.  Urges come in powerful waves, which grow in intensity before they crash, but you can ride the waves instead of fighting them.  Breathe calmly and deeply while you observe your physical feelings and thoughts without judgment until they have passes.  Practice meditation daily in order to summon the techniques quickly whenever the urge strikes.
