How do you avoid binging..?

Quote  |  Reply

Even though I hate myself for it, I always overeat way way too much, even if I'm already full....and I always can tell I'm going to beforehand but still do it anyways. Advice? Anyone with the same problem? And no, its not because I dont eat enough throughout the day.

Oh boy, I'm the same!
On Sunday i ate so much that i felt physically ill and was seriously worried that i had somehow damaged my stomach because it hurt so much.
Monday, i felt ill all day and kept having stomach cramps.
Today i feel kinda okay, but I'm so worried I'm just going to do it again!!

I've fallen off the diet wagon :(
All i've had today is cake (two different kinds) and alcohol.
Sorry, i don't have any advice except to find things that steal your attention.
If you have a pc game or a book or some activity which always graps your complete attention, always do those things around the times when you are prone to binging.
:( I've lost interest in everything so unfortunately this doesn't work for me, but it might work for you!
Try adding 3 or 4 x 3oz portions of steamed vegetables to your plate and eating those first.  Vegetables are very filling indeed and you can eat those without damaging your waistline.

Other measures.  Always sit down at a table to eat and don't watch TV or use the computer at the same time.  Eat slowly, chewing food well and sipping water between forkfuls.... eating more slowly allows the body to register feeling full.  When you've finished eating, wash your plate and have a hot drink.  Then leave the room where you've been eating.

gi-jane, thanks for the advice i'll definitely be using it!!

I ate a ridiculous amount tonight, I am getting a fresh start tomorrow. no more eating too much.

One thing I do which seems to work is when I feel the urge, drink a large amount of a carbonated drink (diet pop, sparkling water, etc).  This usually upsets my stomach and fills me up enough so that I don't want to binge anymore.  (I know this may not be the healthiest way, but oh well binging isn't healthy either.

If I have been binge free for a while and feel like I want to binge, I will let myself indulge in a smart way.  I will make sure to get some sweets, say ice cream, in a controlled portion and eat it around other people.  This way I can't binge.  Also I try to make sure I hang around people for a little while after until the urge goes away.  Plus after being with people my mood is uplifted and I don't want to binge anymore for that.

I agree with allyferr. When the urge to binge bubbles up, get some sort of human contact. You can meet up with a friend or just call someone. If you can, go to a phone with a cord in a room where no food is stored. Also, try to call someone interesting or someone you know who is not going through a break-up or something. Their depressive emotions can only tempt you more.

Also, getting out of the house. You can drive to a friend's house, shop or just window shop, run some errands (preferably not grocery shopping!), go to the gym, walk your dog, or just take a walk yourself with some music.

Cowcow,

I have the same problem. I am a recovering bulimic and I am already about 15-20 lbs overweight. I eat mainly healthy foods (no fried foods, lots of fruits and vegetables...), but I always overeat even when I am not hungry. It makes me deeply depressed. I don't know why I eat when I am already full.  And I don't keep junk food in the house, but if I do happen to buy ice cream or bake for guests, once they leave I overeat the dessert for the next couple of nights. And if I go out to eat, I eat my whole plate...not just what fills me up. Why do we do this?

I have this problem particularly at night. What I've started doing is stopping myself before I go for more food and I've actually started asking myself, "are you hungry?" and pausing to think about it. Almost all of the time I'm actually not hungry, I just want something to stuff my face with. I drink a lot of green tea these days, which I think has helped suppress the binging urges a bit, so if you're a tea drinker but don't drink green tea, I would recommend starting! Also sometimes if I feel like I want to eat something but don't want to have a huge binge, I grab some gum and chew on it - just to keep my mouth busy, because sometimes it's just the feeling of chewing that I crave, and not the actual food.

Are you not satisfied with what you're eating?

A lot of time I find that when I eat something and it's not what I like or preferred, I overeat other foods or I keep searching for that satisfaction.
