Should I avoid splenda while eating clean?

Hi,

I heard that you shouldn't have splenda or any artificial sweetners while eating clean. Will this really sabotage the diet?

I'm not sure if it'll sabatoge you but it's fake...so I wouldn't put it in my body if I didn't have to.

It's like drinking diet soda...it is SOMETHING...there's no way that doesn't do anything to you just because it doesn't have calories.

I use real sugar if I'm baking, maybe try that truvia stuff?  At least that's natural

Yeah well i define clean eating as eating pure foods..and splenda is not included in that category. stick to the motto...if god didn't make it, don't eat it...when trying to eat clean. plus splenda isn't the best thing to get addicted to. i should know. i used to use up to 20 packs a day. it was disgusting. now i use at the maximum 5. i use organic honey to sweeten oatmeal and have found just using less sugar instead of fake sugar works just as well. and no one knows the true consequences of splenda. it could be wreaking havoc on our systems

If you're trying to eat clean it's a good idea to avoid anything artificial.  You tend to find that the products in which artificial sweetners appear are heavily manufactured so that's another consideration.  Good tips for clean eating...

  • Don't eat any food that makes health claims on the packets.  It's usually reformulated junk
  • If a food has more than five ingredients it's probably worth leaving on the shelf.

I'm not sure what you're expecting a clean diet to do that artificial sweetners might 'sabotage'.  If you're hoping to lose weight that'll be determined by calories in vs calories out.  If you're hoping to reduce bloating or fluid retention it'll help if you leave out sweetners.

try stevia. it is an all natural sweetner, comes straight from a plant, doesn't do the saem to your blood sugar as refined sugar.  start out with a teeny tiny bit... too much stevia goes in the opposite direction as intended and turns bitter. you can get it at any health food or organic store. you could also naturally sweeten things by adding fruit.  i buy plan oatmeal and add blueberries, plain unsweetened yogart and add strawberries.

There's also a stevia product called Truvia, which is apparently made from the highest quality parts of the Stevia plant and is a little more similar in texture to granulated sugar than regular Stevia (which can tend to clump).  Good luck eating clean, I have been meaning to do this too!

Thanks guys! Does stevia taste like splenda? Where can I find it?

Stevia isn't nearly as sweet as splenda (as you most likely know, artificial sweeteners - splenda included - are WAY sweeter than sugar)... It's a different sort of taste.  It's sweet, but not as in-your-face sweet.  I have found it in my local grocery stores now next to the sugar and equal and all that.  Whole Foods definitely has it if you don't see it in your regular food store.  Hope you like it!

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but it brings me to a question I've been contemplating for some time, perhaps someone can help me out.  Can you chew gum while "eating clean"?  The sugar free has some sort of artificial sweetener, and the regular still has a ton of coloring and artificial flavors and sugar, etc.

That's a really good question jafried...I'm curious to know what the answer is...
