going away for the weekend -- help!

Quote  |  Reply
so i'm going interstate for four days to visit some friends/family, and i will have limited access to the internet to track calories.

not only that, the people i'm seeing are all naturally slim and don't care about eating healthy (and wouldn't understand my desire to lose weight so i can't just explain that i'm on a diet), and will probably tempt me with a big mac or heavy pasta kinds of meals -- and i'm not very good at resisting temptation!!

these people also really enjoy going out for breakfast, lunch and dinners --usually, i'm not even hungry until around lunch time, but if i go out to breakfast, i will order something -- therefore adding to my calories for the day dramatically! what's more, i usually plan all my meals in advance and track the calories as i eat them, or else i lose track or underestimate my intake, but the scales don't lie!

what can i do to avoid going over my calorie limit every day without knowing exactly how many calories i'm putting into my mouth? how can i explain to them that i have another 20 lbs to drop and i can't afford a weekend of bingeing! especially to my very best friend, who is recovering from an ED and would FREAK at me for even trying to lose weight.

:( help!

i'm going to chicago for the next three days with my boyfriend who thinks i'm stupid for counting cals. i also won't have internet access and can't afford a weekend of bingeing either! we're in the same boat...i'm doing as much research as i can for low cal and low sodium foods. basically all you can do is little things like no salad dressing or get a hamburger (no cheese) without ketchup, mayo, mustard, that kind of stuff. and if you go out to a place like cracker barrel for breakfast, opt for the oatmeal breakfast. it's high in fiber and will keep you full for a long time...other than that, just try your best to eat healthy. good luck to you!

and good luck to you too!

Eat plenty of vegetables and lean protein sources.  There's always something available like chicken salads or sandwiches.  Don't worry to much, just try the best you can.

Avoid added fats like mayo, cheese, and anything fried. Go for poultry and fish, keep away from the bread basket. Try oatmeal, yogurt, or  cottage cheese and a fruit plate for breakfast. A veggie omelet with dry toast is good too. If your companions are ordering appetisers, get a broth based soup (no creams) or salad with dressing on the side. Munch on fruits and veggies whenever possible. If you still feel the need to count, there are a variety of calorie counting books, I like Calorie King, that give you basic nutrition info for alot of foods and many chain restaurants. Just log on paper, and add up your calories, fats, carbs, protiens. I use one of those tiny notebooks that you can keep in your purse when I will be away from the internet for an extended period of time.

If you even eat at maintenance, you should see little difference in the scale upon your return. If you will be eating out alot, stay off the scale for a day or two after you get home for you body to process all the added sodium. This helps with the oh so frustrating post vacation scale shock!

Morrighu's Restaurant Survival Guide

  1. Have an apple and glass of water before you leave.
  2. Order a big salad as your appetizer.  Have them put everything on the side.  Dressing, cheese, and all the other little tidbits.  That way you can control what you're eating.  Otherwise the salad can be worse than a Big Mac.
  3. Sip water between bites.
  4. Entrees - Have a shrimp cocktail from the appetizer menu and some veggies.  Go for anything baked, steamed, grilled, broiled, or boiled.  Be sure to have sauces and such put on the side.
  5. Avoid mayo, cream, cheese and such like the plague.
  6. If it's Italian food - stick to the marinara sauces but avoid anything with meat.
  7. If it's Mexican food, stick to the fajitas or other grilled items.
  8. If it's anything Asian, avoid dishes that say tempura or "crispy" or named after anyone.  Find things that are steamed or ask for "no oil".   Have soup as the main course.  Pho is always a good bet.
  9. If you want dessert, split it with someone.  Eat a few bites and then push the plate over in front of them and let them finish it.
