This is an awkward thing to talk about...

Sorry if I sound very eccentric.

I have a really, really bad addiction to almonds and other nuts. Seriously...

I just ate probably 3-4 oz or so of raw almond kernels today - the most I've EVER ate. I don't know what took over me - I usually eat about 1 oz a day to stay "heart-healthy". Nee dless to say, I was very guilty about it (450-600 cals right there) so I went for a 20-minute jog a half-hour afterwards. However, near the end of my jog I felt really sick, and promptly after stepping into the house I sorta... pooped myself empty. And for the rest of this day I've just ate and ate and ate... literally just going crazy. And now I'm already over what I've supposedly burned for the day.

Can anyone offer information on how... damaging this was to my calorie intake?

its one day who cares, no worries really... people think one bad day will condem them and their diet.... it wont.
Really? O_O;; But it's happened already a few times this month (because it's never happened before...) since nuts became irresistible for me. I was wondering if it was just the rawness, but it still doesn't explain why it only occurs sometimes (I eat almonds and pistachios everyday). XD er... thanks for your comment.
.. All kinds of nuts? ;]
If you aren't getting enough fat in your meals and snacks, then your body will often times create cravings for high fat foods. If you've been restricting your intake (I'm assuming you are as you're on a calorie counting website) then it would make sense that you are mostly restricting fats as they make the biggest difference per gram in your calorie count. Check out what your percentages are and if your fats are really low, then consider revising your current eating regimen.

 He he he.... (CD)

....and no, it won't destroy your "diet"...but it may impede you a little bit making the weight loss slower is all.

XD Yeah. All kinds of nuts. I'd go crazy with brazil nuts if they weren't so fatty. Haha, my mom complains that I'm going to eat us out of the house through nuts because they're so expensive.

*wince* Darmmit, I forgot to check my analysis for the day - it reads:

Fat - 38.6% (59 grams)
Protein - 13.9% (48 grams)
Carbohydrates - 47.5% (164 grams)

O_O I really am eating too much fat... But I have porridge for breakfast, and a bowl of rice at lunch and dinner so... I think I lack protein. T_T

Don't worry about it, sweetie.
1 day every blue moon is absolutely fine. ^_^
Don't make it a habit, and all will be well. Just enjoy the rest of your day!
If you're lacking so much protein, but don't want to do bits of meat (fish is great for the heart!), what about tofu? ^^
One thing I always do is have a 'free' day every two weeks.  This way you can make those evil cravings go away and actually enjoy dieting.

I also tried those Yves veggie burgers and they are SOOO good and super high in protien for only 110 calories.  Best burger I've had in a long time.  The Yves substitute for ground hamburger is also really good.

Hello; I love nuts, too, and can easily eat more than 4 oz at a time.  So I don't bring more than 4 oz into the house when I'm in weight loss mode.  I always try to count out the number I intend to eat--only 8 to 10, or only 1-2 teaspoons of nut butter-- and I always eat them with something else:  lunch, supper, or, an apple as a snack.  I also keep jicama and carrots "at the ready" for "crunch time."  These strategies work.  When they don't--and, as in your case, that happens--I forget about it and "start over" next meal, not next day.  Good luck.

hey,

if you have started working out more recently, or are generally deficient in protein you may tend to go crazy on things like nuts. i was training for a triathlon while i was a vegetarian and i couldn't stop eating peanut butter. if you are not a vegetarian i would suggest trying to up your protein intake.

but if it only happens now and then, don't worry. deprivation is the quickest path failure.

Mmm... I LOVE tofu - in any shape, size, or form! XD And because we're an Asian family, we have it at least twice a week, fish soup once a week, and whole steamed fish once a week.

:/... I wonder if I just get ENOUGH protein, but it's overwhelmed by too much fat from nuts. *sigh*

Kagura, I do the same thing.  The sad thing is I used to eat nuts daily, count out 15 nuts for morning snack no problem.

Then something snapped.  Im not saint but Im not really easily tempted.  Then there are the nuts and Im just like you but dont understand it.  Eventhough its healthy fat, I wonder if thats it - like the potato chips that say you cant eat just one.

I now go through phases where I dont buy them - then I'll get a can eventually and it happens again.  Argh!  Its like an achilles heel.  I realized I wasnt really getting almost no fat outside them though so I think that may be part of it.  Ive switched to PB, more caloric but after I get my spoon of it, I leave it in the pantry and so far so good.  Feeling your pain --

Kagura, I have a nut problem, too.  I have had to keep myself off the whole ones or I go crazy.  I can handle nut butter (like almond butter) in moderation.  Maybe you should try that.

My DH brought a big can of cashews (my worst weakness) into the house last night and i just about throttled him!  He promptly took them out to his car and is taking them to work for his snacks there!

I have the same problem. I once ate 400g of cashews followed by 200g brazil nuts! The truth is, I think that everyone who likes nuts finds it hard to stop noshing (after all, what harm can just one more little nut do?) They're a good source of healthy oils, so it's best not to give them up completely. I recommend buying them in the shell as they take a lot longer to eat and you can't have more than one at a time (I used to eat them like some people eat popcorn - i.e. in handfuls!). Also, like others've said, count out the amount you're going to eat in advance of actually having them.

One day won't make any real difference. Don't stress.

Yes, count them out first...they are sooooo yummy and addicting, it's tough when there is a huge bowlful in front of you.

I love nuts especially raw almonds. I'll eat the whole can if I let myself. Well Blue Diamond just came out with 100 calorie packs! That way you pay attention to how much you eat. Also, if you eat nuts in shells keep the shells on a plate so you can pay attention to how much you eat. Hope this helps!

Pattikins,

XD Aww... wish my mom was so helpful. She refuses to stop buying almonds, claiming that "someday, I'll have to learn to control myself with alcohol, smoking, etc. so if I can't even handle almonds now..."

Ohhh noooo... don't even get me started with almond butter. The last few years when we've had peanut butter regularily in the house, I'd literally SLOB it on to sandwiches. *shudders at memories* I know it's gross, but I just can't trust myself to even be moderate with almond butter if I tried that. Plus, my mom just sort of permanently stopped buying processed foods. (As if WHOLE nuts are any better for my gluttony >_>)

Hehe, man, cashews are sooooo good - it's a good thing my dad likes cashews though (he doesn't like almonds) so we at least figh- SHARE them.

I've TRIED that so many times. And guess what happens? -_-;; *is hopeless* I take a handful of 6 or something... eat them in my room, then the resistence melts away and I JUST HAVE to have more...

And about buying only in-shell nuts, xP my parents don't have the time to shell them when they snack on nuts, so they prefer to get shelled.

>.< Lemme tell you something REALLY weird about me with almonds... the only way I can "slow" down with eating them is by eating the really wrinkly, rough, oddly-shaped, shrivelled... etc. ones first. I find them crunchier - but I'm careful to avoid black spots and rancid almonds.

Thanks for sharing!
