Do B vitamins supplements help?
Asked by samantha81 on Sep 03, 2009 in Nutrition

I've been taking B12, B6 and Biotin vitamins for a while. The bottles say they assist with protein and carb metabolism and aid in converting these things into energy.  Is this true?  Does this give your body the extra boost and aid in digestion?

Answer

The eight B vitamins are essential for generating energy at the cellular level from carbohydrate, protein and fat , but that does not mean they speed up metabolism or aid in digestion.  B vitamins occur naturally in a wide variety of food and are added to fortified foods as well.  Healthy young people who eat a balanced diet do not need B vitamin supplements; however, B vitamins are not harmful because excesses are excreted in the urine.  The exception is vitamin B6, which can cause nerve damage at an extremely high dose.
