Hi guys,

I just had my first real prenatal appointment.  Here in Canada, you don't get an early ultrasound unless you want to do the triple screen for downs, which I chose not to do.  So I have to wait til 19 weeks for the anatomical US to see that my little bean is doing ok.

My midwife took a lot of blood and felt for the fundus, but she couldn't feel it yet.

Glad to hear everyone else is doing well. And I'm so envious of those of who are hearing hearbeats!

I am also guessing boy for me, but that's just my gut feeling. I heard the heartbeat at my 6 week scan but didn't realise how fast it was beating was of any interest then - I just knew it was beating fast!

I have another scan on the 31st of this month so I will be sure to ask then.

I've been away from CC for a few days with some pretty rough morning sickness. I'm only 8.5 weeks so there could be a while to go before it eases up. Undecided Does anyone know if vomiting due to morning sickness is harmful to the baby? It just feels so rough I am terrified every time it happens that it will damage the baby somehow. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

Babies are resilient beings! I certainly wouldn't think that you'd harm the baby by forcefully vomiting.

When I was about 12 weeks pregnant, I slipped and fell on ice and slid halfway under my car. I landed squarely on my lower back and was worried for days. I even called my doctor and they said unless I started bleeding that I should wait it out. My son just turned a year old and is (still) perfectly healthy. :)

Thanks, bier. Smile

So I was at my drs on Thursday, last week, because of pain in my lower back upper behind area.  The nurse I talked to said that it could be pregnancy related but that it was really early in the pregnancy to be having that kind of pain.  So she scheduled me in for an appt that day.  I told the dr what was going on and he said that it was definatley pregnancy related and that it is my siatica (sp?) nerve that is in my behind that is causing the problems.  He basically told me that there is nothing you can do except keep heat on it and take 1 tylenol.
So anyway, I am 11 weeks pregnant and this is really early to be having this problem and he said that this could be the start of a very painfull pregnancy...GREAT!  I waitress 2 nights a week and had them take me off the schedule, but I have to work at my other (fulltime) job and sometimes the pain is really bad.  I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem or if you have had this problem with a previous pregnancy, if you have any advice?  (I did hear the heartbeat at the appt, so that is exciting!)

I hope that everyone else is doing well!

i was in a pretty bad car accident about 5 years ago and it damaged my siatica and i have a lot of other pains that hit off and on, pre-pregnancy. im 11 weeks now and have noticed the past week or two thats its been bothering me a bit. so for me its a little different, haveing had issues with it before. but i do know it'll probably just get worse for me as i get bigger and my body has to support more weight. but whoever said pregnancy was easy? it'll all be worth it in the end.

I had this problem with my first pregnancy but late in the game. I'm now 8 weeks preggers and it's kicking in again.  The only relief I can find is keeping a pillow behind my back. Especially when sleeping. Sometimes I will get an extra blanket and shove under my back, that works well. Anything to keep my back straight.  The heating pad works well too.

with my 2nd baby I had really bad sciatic problems.  A few times my right leg would give out while standing.  And oh the pain was brutal.  I have problem pregnancies so the sciatic just compounded everything and doc. sent me on sick leave/full bed rest at 32 weeks. Staying off my feet and using heat helped a bit as well.  The last 2 weeks I was on tyl. #3 for the pain.

Wasnt until labour that the sciatic problem went away b/c baby moved off the nerve!!

I, too, had major sciatic issues during my second pregnancy. Tylenol didn't do much for me. I have some of those pillows you can warm up in the microwave and those were amazing. I always had issues when sleeping on my side at night. The pain was almost unbearable. Getting out of bed in the morning was tough, too. I'd have to limp around for a few minutes before the pain would settle down.

I hope it's not a huge issue for you ladies!

I went and saw my PCP on Tuesday about this lower back pain issue and he said, where I was pointing to was not my sciatic nerve and that it is just lower back pain.  He gave me some exercises to do, which I have done but they put me in such pain that I don't think they are helping.  So now I'm not doing the exercises.  I am pretty much just trying to make it through the work day, going home and sitting on a heating pad on and off for 20 min.  He said that it could last for 6 weeks, lets hope not!  (Today I am feeling better than I have the past couple of days, so that's positive.)

I hope that everyone else is doing well!

Ebbz, sorry to hear that the lower back pain is so bad. Hope you feel better soon!

Hopws everyone else's weekend going? Mine has been really nice. We had glorious weather today. My energy levels are back up  ( I am almost 16 weeks now) so I went for a long (about 6 miles) walk. Loved it!

so ive figured out that my baby tells me when i need to slow down or calm down. this has been kind of hard to deal with lately. there are limits that my body is putting on me. like how late i can/should stay up, the activities i do, my emotions. and by emotions i mean, if i get nervous or really upset about something, something is weighing heavy on my mind, then i get sick. if i dont get home and go to bed by 9 or 10, i get sick.

like on sunday, i came home from church and started cleaning the house. we we had a bbq planned for that evening. and i got sick in the middle of getting the house cleaned up.

i know this is just my body telling me to take it easy, but really, cleaning the house?! thats not that much hard work right, haha?

is anyone else going though this? its hard to get anything done or to even plan on anything!

I have noticed that if we have a lot of dishes I have to get a chair and finish them sitting down.  Something about the hot water and  everthing just makes me feel queesy. I also can't stay up very late I'm usually in bed by 10 and if not then I am really feeling it the next day. I guess we just do what we can and learn to live with our temporary limitations.

Isami, I know how you feel all of a sudden I want to walk home from work everyday.  It usually takes about an hour but I feel so much more energy now.  I'm really happy about that.

Like with Peaches, I'm withholding my speculation until more data is available. Sealed

Congratulations jujubeas! How exciting!

I have my next scan on Nov 18th- thats the big one- will be around 19 weeks.

Also, a lady from the hospital called up and asked if I would like to participate in a study that is trying to find out whether a shortened cervix is associated with pre-term labor. I said yes, since it only involves another transvaginal ultrasound and then some follow ups if they find me eligible. I hope I dont have a shortened cervix, but I thought it would be good to participate in research like this to further the understanding of pregnancy and birth complications.

What does everyone think? Are too many ultrasounds not good for baby?

I don't think it's a problem.  My friend was a high risk pregnancy and she had one every month.  That's like 8 during the whole pregnancy.  Surely the study won't require more than that, right?

I don't think it's a problem. I knew a woman who had ultrasounds every week for the first trimester and then every two weeks after that. I don't think that would have been allowed if there was a risk to the baby.
