So today my freind had her wisdom teath out, and I got her some baby food as a joke, but it suddenly dawned on me as I was reading the nutrition, that they would make great little snacks! Most of them are no more than 100 cals each and come in all types and flavours, surely anything you are craving for you could find in the baby food aisle.
(I do mean this as a snack too, I dont intend to go and eat only 3 jars of baby food for a whole day and chew and spit most of it! Just had to add this before anyone jumped on the whole ED spin, I eat a very healthy diet :))
Has anyone else tried this??
Reason: Moved from Weight Loss to Foods forum, thanks.
I haven't but the apple blueberry dessert is delicious! I think I ate as much as my babies did :-)
That actually sounds like a really good idea! Plus, I'll be getting my wisdom teeth out soon, so that gives me an excuse to get some babyfood!
I've heard of a couple people eating those toddler snacks, too, jennasourus! I haven't, but I remember when I babysat for a little one a few years ago, some of those graham-cracker-type snacky-things were quite yummy! My question would be for how long one would actually stay full...
Well let me just say my boyfriend thinks I am a total weirdo eating baby food lol.
they have these things that are like cheese doodles. Those are awesome! They come in a small tin and are kinda expensive so I eat them very slowly. Its nice when u just feel like munching on something salty. They are only 35 cal per serving.
Then their are also these puff things that come in cinnamon apple, banana and sweet potato. Those are pretty good too. The cinnamon apple are my fave. Those are also ridiculously low in calories.
I tried the cereal bars (that look like nutrograin bars) those weren't so yummy. I also tried the raviolis (that's when my boyfriend really thought I went loony) those were meh but I imagen that if you grew up eating chief boy are dee or anything like that those wouldn't be so bad.
I hadn't thought of that....when I was a pre teen my best friend and I used to eat them...she loved the apricot and I liked the bananna LOL
Man...talk about a waste of money. I didn't buy baby food for my DS when he was an infant. I realize in calorie sense they would make a great snack..but I am just as happy to weight out my snacks as I am the rest of my meals. Prior Planning is all it takes.
my mom used to do this all the time! i hate the texture, but my nephew has those puff things and they are like sweet cheetos.
I was actually surprised to see that the Gerber snacks don't have much in the way of nutrition, either. They're low cal, but they don't have any vitamins or minerals either.
So, I've stopped buying him the snacks. I keep some on hand if we're taking a long car trip because he'll munch on the stars and stay quiet, but otherwise, I find other things for him to eat.
Personally, I'd rather eat an apple or other piece of fruit for a snack. It's also low cal and has actual nutrients in it. Plus, it's cheaper than buying the pre-made stuff. :)
Does anyone know of any other fun snack tips?
cecilyb03- I figured the babyfood issue out very quickly in my house. We were on a tight budget so I tried to justify the "nutritional" value of baby food and toddler snacks. I couldn't find where 90% of the gerber stuff was any better than what I could cook up myself LOL. I will admit thought I LOVED the Freeze Dried frust snacks, but then I found out our Local Health food store sold freeze dried fruit at half the price per pound.
I really like freeze dried fruit. I am pretty sure the nutritional value is much less than fresh fruit but they are easy to eat, keep forever in proper storage, and have less sugar than Dehydrated fruits.
Jennasourus- Have you considered canned fruit that is preserved in its own juice or Cane juice (not corn syrup) . These types of canned fruit are more expensive..but only by a few cents and the fruit isn't raw.
Unsweetened Apple sauce is DIRT cheap ...and even cheaper if you make it yourself and store it in single serve containers.
There's some pastas that are processed with veggies as well. Although I don't know if it is of any nutritional significance.
Me being the celeb gossip mag queen..lol. I just read this in an issue and said that stars are actually usuing that as a diet, just baby food to lose weight. I mean I wouldn't do that for all my nutritional intake...but to replace some not so healthy snacks with baby food, actually seems like a good idea.
Yes I snack on the rice cereal...it is only 60 calories per serving....I don't eat it everyday, but if I am not trying to exceed a certain amount of calories that day I will knosh on a little rice or mixed grain cereal.....I am so glad to hear that I am not the only one!!!!
i buy baby foods weekly, i like apple/pear, apple/mango and some other ones too (i buy those fruit purees only, havent tried any other baby food). depending on the manufacturer they are 100 to 150 calories, contain vitamins, do not have chemicals etc. they are not exactly filling but they are nice and healthy.
eta: i try to buy organic when i can. i like them (the fruit purees for babies that i buy) when i travel-they are very portable, can be stored at room temp etc. they are nor cheap and when i am just at home/at work etc. i buy normal fruit, but when pressed for time, i will happily buy baby food
@jennasourus are you allergic to just raw fruits and veggies? I am, it's called oral allergy syndrome, and I can eat cooked/canned/pickled fruits and veggies, but raw make my mouth/lips/throat raw and swollen and my nose/eyes/ears itchy. The last time i had watermelon i lot my voice for several hours and really freaked me out.
After allergy testing they told me to stay away from fresh fruit and veg. Leafy greens like lettuce and spinach are okay, but even corn, asparagus, etc. I have to make sure is well cooked.
I know some ppl say its expensive/weird, but its just food. I think the custards and meals taste horrible, but maybe thats cos I had ot eat them when i was sick and when i got my wisdom teeth out.

Figure out what type of eater you are and you might just find the answer to permanent weight loss.
