consume less calories than you burn

Frown I mean really, that's all you can do to reduce body fat

You can also do exercises that target those problem areas.  A lot of what people perceive as "fat" is actually due to untoned muscles.

well like i said before i have no problem with fat any place else.. but no matter how much weight i lose...the back fat just seems to "hang" around for lack of better word. im on 1200 calories a day but its not doing a thing for these flaps.

also, does anyone have any suggestions on particular types of exercises that work for this problem?

hey about the back fat problem it might be a bit extreme but liposuction will definitly get rid of it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

try planks.

they strengthen your back/abs muscles, it might help in toning.

I agree with loseweight1234, also when running if you swing your arms back and fourth while using light weights.. that helps as well.

i agree with loseweight1234. strength training is the only way to tighten up specific areas.

There is no exercise that will cause you to reduce fat in a specific area. None.

The only way to lose fat is to consume fewer calories than you burn.

Although you cannot spot reduce, you can target the muscle in a particular area so that as the muscle gets stronger it makes the area appear more lean. This in combination with cardio and watching what kinds of foods you eat will help. You'll never reduce fat if you eat foods high in fatty content no matter how much you burn! You'll lose weight because you'll lose muscle...that's never the goal.

As for an exercise that will help, try pull ups and dips. I had the same problem, I started those two exercises regularly and within a few months, my back fat is just about gone! Yay!

Find the user on here "Iamme" she's done loads of work on her back and has fantastic looking muscles now, she'll be able to help you more than anyone.

So, here's the stupid question of the day: define "back fat"? What is it, where is it, etc.

Edit:  So I Googled "back fat" and found some pics of the unsightly stuff!  lol  IMO, "back fat" could be done away with by wearing bras and shirts/tops that fit!  For me it belongs right up there with "muffin top" (which could be done away with by wearing pants/jeans that aren't two sizes too small!)  Just my opinion, anyway.

well as they may be the case with some people, that is not the case with me. my clothes by no means are too small or tight and neither is my bra. this is something that just exists on its own even if i have no clothes on at all. what exactly are dips and planks?

I think you have to lose fat all over to lose fat on your back.  I used to have lots of extra unsightly fat everywhere including my back, I had that crease thing going on.  When I lost weight I lost the back fat.  Same goes for cellulite in my experience, when you lose fat, the cellulite goes away too.

I have a question for you all.  I have a petite body frame and (since I'm a little heavier than I should be) I have back fat.  So does this mean I HAVE to be thin in order to get rid of it?  I keep hearing that overall weight loss has to happen before back fat can be lost.  So am I destined to be thin if I am to lose this back fat?

stop worrying about specific areas and start losing fat weight.. if there's fat, and you've lost enough from all the other places - it will be burned eventually.

and why the heck are you eating 1200 cals ? that's like 400-600 less than your RMR (sleep metabolism)

To be perfectly honest, when I was overweight I never even considered that my back was fat too!  I avoided looking at myself naked, period!  lol  I guess I have to agree with those who have said that you have to lose weight in general in order to lose the back fat, cellulite, etc.  (Though I think cellulite never really "goes away", it just shrinks.)

like i said before i have lost plenty of overall weight, but these stick around to a degree. as for the 1200 calories, that is the recommended amount for my weight loss program which has worked quite well. not everybody needs the same amount of calories.
