Getting back to where I was

Quote  |  Reply

So in the past few weeks I have been doing much better in my recovery. I have been eating more, working out less and steadily gaining.

However, for the past three days I have been away on a camping trip with my school. I knew that eating would be difficult so I tried my best to get out of it, but to no avail. I knew that they were serving pizza, pasta and grilled cheese and I knew I wouldn't be eating any of it, so I came prepared. I stocked up on protein bars, dried fruit and almonds and did my best to eat whenever possible.

Obviously, I was not consuming a balanced diet and I came back home with a throbbing head, feeling nauseous and looking frighteningly pale. The problem was, even when I came home I simply could not eat properly. I had to force myself to eat a cup of brown rice and some grapes, but the thought of meat just made me gag. I feel like I did when I began "refeeding". What used to make me feel healthy and energized is now making me feel sick.

My question is: How can I get back to where I was as quickly as possible? Should I force myself to eat through the bloating or should I ease back into a healthier routine?

You should really have made much more of an effort to eat the same as everyone else on the camping trip.  Were the organisers aware of your problem?  Aware that you had special dietary needs? (That's a legitimate thing to flag up)  Or did you just decide to keep the whole thing under wraps and hope no-one noticed?

You're going to have to force through this because you've effectively allowed yourself to lapse back into old habits.  Drink plenty of fluids (after meals) to help combat the bloating but really, get right back in the saddle or you'll simply prevaricate away a lot of the progress you'd made.

Don't try to do this alone.... Get help from your family and, if necessary, the doctor that's supervising your recovery.

Hi! hard luck with the camping trip, but dont be worrying about it, you may have now learned a lesson from it-that meals cant always be perfect and that it doesnt matter if they are not, if u had tried these foods you would have realised that they are ok to have every now and again.

I think you should get straight back to eating like u were. It just goes to show how fast ed habits can slip back in and why it is so imprtant to keep eating and breaking ed rules. The chances are that if u had gone on the camping trip and eaten those foods (even SOME of the time, and brought sambos to have the rest of the time) you would have come back feeling a-stronger than your ed, and b-less weak.

After a night out I have to be extra careful to eat properly again. It only been three days, so it wont take long to get used to eating again. It will only need to be mechanical for a day or two and then u should feel ok again. To stop this happening again, maybe try introducing more convienience foods into you meals-like pizza or grilled cheese so that u can be more flexible with eating?

Thanks so much for all of your support. I didn't tell the organizers of the trip because I don't want my private issues becoming public knowledge.

But you guys are right. I am heading off to university next year and I want to be able to eat even when my "safe" foods are unavailable. I am eating through the bloating right now, and I next time I see my therapist I am going to discuss how I should begin to tackle these fear foods.
