Hi-

So the past year I've been struggling with recovery from anorexia. I've gotten back to a healthy weight, but now I deal with issues about control about what I'm eating. The ONLY thing I want is to be rid of this! Of thinking about food, and planning, and not feeling like I can eat what I want. I have gotten a lot better about eating things of which I don't know the caloric value, but I just can't let go.

Now, I'm worried that if I did stop counting or stop planning, I would be under my required amount each day, or radically over (meaning I'd gain weight again. I'm happy right where I am, 123 lbs. & 5'4"). Has anyone been in this situation? Any tips, tricks, words of wisdom? I feel so lost. After I've worked so hard to make progress, it feels like I've hit a brick wall. Thank you!

Have you raised this with your team?

Wean yourself away slowly. Start to learn what a proper portion looks like, which may mean having to weigh out amounts of things so you can gauge a visual of them (like weighing out a 50g portion of dry rice or pasta and so on) and slowly work up to measuring with your eyes.

What do you maintain on right now? Are you eating what you need to be for your age - better to ask, how old are you? Either way, http://www.mypyramid.gov may be worth looking at. But I would honestly talk to your team about making this move.

I see my doctors next week, and I will most definitely be talking to them about this.

I'm almost seventeen, and I've been maintaining on about 1750-1950 per day. I run 4.5 miles three times a week and other than that I'm a cheerleader (but our practices are honestly just standing around for two hours).

I like the ideas of learning how to properly portion out items; one of my major hurdles right now is evenly spacing meals throughout the day because I tend to backlog around 500-600 for after dinner. It is, again, a control issue. But I'm working on that!

Thank you for your prompt reply!

Considering you're quite active, have you tried testing your maintainance levels to about 2000?

Also, a meal breakdown of 1800 (inbetween those two levels, so tweak as appropriate):

Breakfast 400
Snack 200
Lunch 400
Snack 200
Dinner 400
Snack 200

As one example.
