going back to school=drinking every weekend=getting fat??

Quote  |  Reply
I am headed back to college tomorrow and that means weekends full of drinking. I'm afraid that this will compromise my weight loss, and I REALLY don't want that to happen. I was thinking about this, entering in 2 beers and a shot everyday to calorie-count and then eating off of that, this way by the weekend I will have banked enough calories to consume 21 drinks. (Thats for thurs. Fri. & Saturday night) and if I dont drink that much, or stay in during one weekend night then I can have a big dinner or ice cream or something. Does this seem like a good idea? Do you think this will help me avoid gaining weight at school?

I'll admit that there were times in college that I drank a lot, but I'll be candid: It's the times I can actually remember that were the best for me. Yeah, I drank a double rum and diet on the weekends, but that wasn't enough to get me drunk. Maybe you should visit your student health center to see if you can talk to someone about binge drinking. (7 drinks in one night is binge drinking.)

It's important to be able to have fun with your friends without alcohol.

Personally, I think it sounds like a horrible idea to falsely log calories during the week to bank for binge drinking on the weekends.  But hey, that's just me.
when i drink a lot i never feel like eating much the next day... blahh...so maybe that makes up for it?
Ahh the perfect post for me to reply to. I have some good advice for u. Here's a few suggestions. One, look up the Cheater's diet. It has done wonders for me. I haven't been following it lately because I've been so busy with school that right now i've been mainly focusing on maintaining but as soon as next week i plan to jump back on this plan. Basically, what it is, is calorie counting still but a very lax way of doing so. On weekdays and u can choose what days as long as it's 5 days,( I usually do sunday through thursday of regular calories counting: Friday and saturdays are my cheat days) u should have whatever ur weight loss cals are. Mine is around 1245 calories. On weekends if u want to drink these are ur cheat days. U actually end up losing because u've boosted ur metabolism and tricked ur body. However, i do want to emphasize to never go overboard with eating or drinking. I usually aim for my maintenance cals or a little higher on the weekends. Mine is about 1840 maintenance cals. It is more than enough as long as ur not chowing down on  chipotle burrittos and drinking White Russians!! LOL. I know you may have doubts about this advice but please look up the diet. It has worked miracles for me. I've gone from 148 to 135 now. Everyone has noticed the weight loss. My goal weight is 125 and my height is 5'5. Try it for a week and see what u think. Also, if ur not interested in that idea, i say ur best bet is to suck it up and log in every calorie from ur drinking and eat less on those days. I'm warning u, do not starve urself, u are probably old enough and aware of the consequences of binge drinking on an empty stomach. In the end, u can still enjoy college life with ur friends. There's no doubt, make ur drinks with diet mixers or club soda as well. Again, it's not only the cheater's diet, many doctors have emphasized that u should have one or 2 days off from any type of diet or weight loss effort. The best part about this kind of program is that it is a lifestyle change. It is so easy to do for the rest of ur life! :)
Hope i helped!
Keep in mind that the calories in beer/alcohol are empty calories - they do you no good.  If you are depriving yourself of necessary nourishment to compensate for empty calories, think about it... you're doing more harm than good, I think.  You'll probably end up tired and feeling like crap.

You have to decide which is more important to you - getting drunk or maintaining your weight.  You probably won't be able to manage both!!

I'm a drinker myself and I've had issues with the same thing.  You just have to set limits for yourself.  Drink one night a week.

If you really wanted to not gain weight, like you say, then the only way to do it is to not drink.  It's hard at first, but does get easier.  If I'd done that when I was in college, I wouldn't be trying to lose 40 lbs. now.

Being in your twenties and just kind of starting out on your own is a time when we build crucial habits that stick with us for life.  If you can't get the drinking under control now, you might not ever be able to get it.

aim for maintenance days on the days you drink - meaning you consume the calories you will burn and neither gain nor lose.

Ohhh Good Lord you remind me of myself back in college.  I will admit I MORE than qualified myself as a binge drinker - it was awful, but a way of life for me back then... riddled with bars and frat parties, and "tailgating" (the worst place ever when on a diet).  The only way I found, for 4 years to not gain (and believe me, I did at some points gain a mini beer belly) was to work out like a nut 6 days a week - 1.5 hours or more of cardio.  I know it wasn't a healthy lifestyle, but it was my life for 4 years... Fortunately I didn't develop a problem from it (though it was rough transitioning after graduation)...  But everyone's different.  I also made sure, after the wknds were over, to take it easy and eat a lot of fresh veggies and drink a lot of water... I avoided "dry" carbs like the plague during the week.
Well, i can say I loved drinking in collage, but it didnt love me. I went to collage weighing about 170ish, after 3 years i was 230, and unfortnalty been that  (and a little more) since then.... well up till this site (30 lbs gone so far). I dont think you can add calories during the week and then drink it up during the weekend. The sad part is most "fun" stuff inst that good for you *(im sure some will argue with that)  cake, ice cream, booze, napping all day long... etc... its all gotta be done in moderation.

Good luck, and if you somehow make it work, let the rest of us know!

Clok
well..lemme tell u..

im not a big drinker but when i do...i dont feel like eating..one night i had 3 beers and some vodka and the next day...i actually lost weight...lol...weeeiiirdd.
Too much alchol consumption really takes a toll on your body.

I think this will really mess up your accomplishment and not to mention your health.

Stay on track and focus on what is most important.  I don't encourage drinking, especially students...........

Listen, I am in college too so I wont give you the "I've learned from my college days" speech. Instead I'll tell you how I slowed my drinking.

One night instead of going to the bars I went for a jog/walk down the main street with my boyfriend where all the bars are and after seeing how gross everyone looked and acted I just didn't want to take part any more. You get stupid when you drink (which is part of the appeal; not gunna lie) but I don't think it's worth it every weekend.

It's not that I don't drink at all....every once and a while I will get in the mood to go out drinking. However in my opinion, I'd rather hang out and "chill" with a smaller group of friends on the weekend. If you know what I mean by "chill".... which is zero calories, unless you get those cravings. :)

I can't stress this enough: learn to love wine!  500 cal/bottle

or think of it this way: calorie wise 7 beer = 1 pint rum = 2 bottles of wine

The wine goes ALOT further

What kind of wine is 500 calories a bottle?  Red wine is about 90 calories per 4 oz, which from my experience is only about 1/2 of the serving you'd get at a restaurant.  That equals about 900 calories per bottle.  White is just a little bit lower.

No one should be drinking a whole bottle of wine at a time, though.  Ugh... talk about hangover.
Oh gosh, I think wine hangovers are one of the worst ever.  Maybe stick to 2.5-3 glasses @ most
I just did the conversion and a 750 ml bottle of red wine is 25.3 ounces which is 539 calories, and while you will have the hangover of a lifetime, and wine isn't good for you, it sure can be fun, and you can sip at a bottle (and keep track of it better than mixed drinks or keg beer) for hours and hours.  Red wine is also supposed to be good for your heart too.  Wine can get you pretty drunk too...wee!  but be careful!
the wine thing isnt a bad idea. so far being back has been interesting. there are girls in my sorority who are going out every night and getting so drunk that they get sick. that to me is not so appealing....while i like going out and i like drinking i DO NOT like getting sick. They also come home and chow down. i feel like its hard to fit in with these girls because i dont drink and eat like that...since i dont really feel comfy at my house yet i havent been eating normal and lost like 3lbs. im begining to get scared because if i loose much more i will be underweight! i know this is getting off topic from the orniginal thread i started..but i just need somewhere to talk about this...and i just wanted to update everyone that i havent been binge drinking yet..totally keeping it social
I am a drinker too and my lifestyle and friends means that I'm going to drink on weekends. I just tell myself that I WILL NOT eat bad stuff just becuase I'm drunk and I WILL work out the next day no matter how I feel. Actually, getting up and working out really helps a hangover and I usually feel better than everyone else!

Just don't overdo it: drink Michelob Ultra, wine, or diet drinks with liquor.

Be careful and don't worry about your sorority sisters--be true to your own personality and people will love you for it.
I drank an ass load in college. But i participated in a sport where i had to weigh a certain weight, and i worked out alot, probably 1-2 hours a week 5 days a week. I never ate dessert or junk food.

My advice, live it up! Work out hard and enjoy yourself on the weekends. Beer is only a hundred calories a piece, and if you run for an hour you have taosted off 6 or more the next day.

You cant eat junk food while your drunk, or it is a double whammy of fat and calories.

Wait til your 30, yourbody stops producing a hormone that aids in hangover recovery, that will stop the drinking permanently.

i am far past college days - but i still go to bars and keggers! lol.

i go later in the evening, bring a tim hortons coffee in with me... then get a glass of ice water with lemon... if i feel like sticking around i may have a ceasar or a beer.... then more water... if it isn't last call by then, i may have one more drink, maybe a gin and tonic.

no sweet stuff
no mixed monstrosoties
no shooters - ever
no slushy or milky drinks ever.

and ahem, i am 30. i can drink more without hangover than i used to likely because i eat well and exercise, so i don't know about this hormone recovery thing.

the last time i got hungover i likely had alcohol poisoning~ not fun
