Getting back on track?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone! I've been a member of this site for a long time, but I haven't really used the forums much before. I'm going to start posting more though because I need the extra support from everyone who is in the same boat :)

Anyway, I was wondering what you guys think of this: I have been eating between 1300-1500 calories a day for about 2 months now. I have lost a considerable amount of weight, but I still have a couple pounds to go. I never usually overeat, but I did on Halloween and yesterday (the day in between, I was fine). Today I was thinking about fasting (either for just one day or a few days) in order to try and get back on track, but I didn't know if that would be worth it or not. I just feel really full, bloated, and gross because I ate tons of food, and it was food that I don't normally eat. So I guess what I'm basically saying is, will fasting help or hurt me in the long run? Will it just make me hungrier and more likely to overeat when I resume my plan? Should I just forget the past few days and start over today and keep on going like I have been?

Thanks so much for your input! I know there are going to be split opinions but I'd really appreciate some explanatory advice :)

By far the best policy after you've overeaten is to go back to your normal diet.... maybe a little lighter if you're still feeling bloated..... with plenty of plain fluids and light exercise to help your digestion.   If you fast you are likely to be mega-hungry the day after and this can trigger more overeating - not a good thing.

Okay, thanks!! One more question: do you think those few days of overeating (a lot of overeating, unfortunately Cry) will hinder my progress/make me gain weight? Not that it really matters because I am going back to my plan of eating between 1,300-1,500 calories a day from here on out, but I just get really worried. I'm thinking too much in the past lol. I think I've answered my own question. Haha gotta keep looking forward and staying positive! I can do this!!

If you gain, you gain.... cross that bridge if/when you come to it.   You need to take in 3600 cals over and above what you use up in order to gain 1lb in solid fat.  You might gain something in fluid... that's pretty common but only temporary.

Just go back to eating normally.  You might end up 1/2lb heavier, you might be the same, you could even be lighter because extra food sometimes gingers up a flagging metabolism.  Deal with the reality when it happens.

You're right. Thank you for your sane take on everything. It's really tough to talk to people in my life about this because some think 1300-1500 cals = too low to begin with, and others don't understand my concern with wanting to eat healthy. I know what's right for me though. I know I want to eat healthfully and I know that I feel best on a light eating plan. The only think that I really need to understand is that it's NOT about perfect! I need to accept mistakes as what they are: mistakes. And keep moving on and just do my best. Being more relaxed about it will serve me well.

Thanks again, I appreciate it!

Unfortunately I made the mistake of not reading your earlier posts so forget everything I just said because you're not being straight with anyone.  I'm annoyed at myself for being fooled by yet another person that wants to starve themselves into an early grave.

You're 15 and back in April you were a perfectly healthy 136lbs for your 5'6" height but aiming to get to something that would mean you were underweight.  So you should probably consider the following

  • Are you a healthy weight for your height now and have you abandoned plans to regress your body to the way it was when you were 12 years old?  If not, then you may have disordered eating problems and for that you need a doctor not a calorie-counting website.
  • Check what is the right amount of nourishment and energy for someone your age, size and who is very active.   See this chart if you're not sure..... http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html....   1300-1500 is seriously undereating and 'the people in your life' are quite correct to be worried about you.   You have a problem.
  • Bingeing is usually the result of starvation..... Because you chronically starve yourself you binged at the weekend

So forget going back to your normal diet because what you're doing is horribly unhealthy.   Start getting a normal amount of food for an active and GROWING young girl....

I'm not 15... I'm 17. I am at a healthy weight right now. I'm sorry, I thought that 1300-1500 was healthy for me... that's what the tools on the site said.

I read the wrong part of the thread.  OK so you're 17, 120lbs and 5'6".  Makes no odds... you're still fooling yourself. Two things....

1.  If you're 17 this site will understate your calorie requirements by 200 - 300 per day because it's calibrated for the over 21s.  If you're a dancer then you need a LOT more energy than that.

2.  If you're 120lbs you're already heading for underweight and your target weight of 110lbs would mean you were clinically underweight.

So the same applies.  Get off this website because it isn't designed for people like you who want to make themselves ILL....  Get some help.

Fasting is not the answer for 2 days of overeating. Undereating is just as dangerous (if not more) than overeating.
