Is it bad to eat less then 1200 calories?
Asked by karynalexandra on Oct 21, 2009 in Weight Loss

I am 5'4" and 150 lbs. I'm trying to lose about 25 lbs. Since I started counting my calories, I have only been eating around 900 calories every day without excercise. I've been eating small meals through out the day. Is 900 too little? Will my body go into starvation mode or is this amount okay to still lost weight?

Answer

Everyone has to eat at least 1200 calories a day in order to have a nutritious diet.  And even with 1200 calories, older women need calcium supplements, menstruating women need to watch their iron intake, everyone needs a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement for insurance, and some folks will need to supplement with fiber too.  In addition, very low calorie diets create feelings of deprivation, which can lead to binging.  They also promote muscle breakdown to satisfy calorie requirements, and they lead to quick (and frustrating) weight loss plateaus.  You, personally, need about 1400 calories with 30 to 60 minutes of cardio-type exercise on most days.  Read about how to plan a simple diet at the Calorie Count Blogs.
