Why the bad grade?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm looking for a little insight as to why the piece of chicken I had at lunch got a D+ when I entered the nutritional information into the food log.

It was a piece of chicken breast, grilled (though the counter doesn't know that), and the only ingredients as listed on my dining hall's web page were Tyson's chicken breast, italian dressing (marinade, I presume), cilantro, and black pepper. Can anyone tell why it got a D+? It was listed as a healthy option at the dining hall!

What's odd is that I found Post Cocoa Pebbles cereal in the food log, and it has a grade of a B-.  Your chicken sounds a lot more healthy (and filling) than cocoa pebbles!

I know-right? I can't figure it out. It was one of the best things I've had at the dining hall in a while, so I'm hoping there's some explanation!

I had the same thing happen to me when I entered some salmon today.  Salmon and chicken are definitely healthy!

Dressing usually gets a poor grade because of the fat content.  And 30 cals fat out of 100 cals is 30%.   189g sodium sounds like a lot for 100 cals.  I don't know what 'Tyson' chicken is, sorry.  Could you change that to be 'raw, fresh, skinless chicken'?

Tyson chicken is just a brand of frozen chicken, basically my dining hall buys frozen chicken breast to cook a variety of ways. I'm not sure whether this is accurate information from my dining hall- it just seemed strange that a piece of marinated grilled chicken would get a D+ on CC, especially since it was offered as a "healthy option."

Oh well...

It doesn't look like the nutrition info. included any vitamins or minerals.  While I'm sure they're in there, if you don't tell the system they're there, you get a lower food grade.

Edited to add: Yep, that's the problem.  I did a recipe of 50 g chicken breast, 1 tsp. italian dressing and 250 mg salt and got almost the exact same nutritional info. but a grade of B-.  So, there are hidden vitamins in your chicken.  :-)

Thank you so much for helping me clear that up, I really appreciate it!
