Bad haircut: ends thinned out too much!!!!

Quote  |  Reply

Hey everyone,

I'm so frustrated. I decided to get my hair trimmed on sat. Before the haircut, I had long, thick hair with long side bangs and layers in the front and back. My hair used to be ''thinned out'' (thicker at the top and formed a ''v'' at the ends) which I totally hated. It took me forever to grow it out and get rid of the ''v'' shape. Everytime I'd go to the salon, I'd ask my hairdresser to even out the ends and give me more of a blunt cut to get my hair looking nice and thick again. Now, on sat, I went back as usual to trim it and asked my hairdresser NOT to thin it out, just to trim my layers and add a couple of shorther ones at the top for volume. Anyway, she ended up layering my hair like crazy, and giving me that V SHAPED haircut again!!! I barely have any hair left at the bottom...although my length is the same I find that it looks so much shorter because its so thin :( I don't understand, after telling her how much I hate thin hair, you'd think she'd get a clue!!! Anyway I know there's nothing I can do (had to vent!)...unless there's some kind of miracle product out there. Anybody else ever gone through this? What did you guys do?

Ugh!  Sorry I can't offer any easy advice as to how to fix it.  From my own past experience, the thing that works the best is immediately going to a different stylist - one whom you either trust, or one at a higher-end salon, if you can afford it - the better the salon, usually the better the stylists are.  Sometimes there are things they can do to change the look to something you'll be happy with, sometimes you just have to let it grow a little and then try again.

Edited to add: Or, you can go back to the stylist who cut it and tell her you're not happy...but I've always figured if they gave me a bad haircut in the first place, it's doubtful they'll be able to make it any better.

If that's not an option, my "Plan B" is browsing the hair product aisle at the drugstore and finding something - mousse, gel, pomade, whatever - that'll allow me to get some control over things until it grows out again.

I've been there, in terms of a stylist that either doesn't listen, or is afraid to communicate.  That's a huge pet peeve of mine.  It sounds like maybe she thought that what you wanted wouldn't work on your hair or something, but she should have opened her mouth and said so!

Good luck.  :)

Thanks. I don't know what it is, I asked for the same thing as usual. It always turns out really nice so I don't understand..and my hair works well with almost any haircut because of its texture (straight and fairly thick). The haircut I have now is not bad or ugly, its just not what I wanted. Like I said it took me forever to grow my ends out of that v and into a nice thick, more blunt cut...which I have to do all over again. Oh well :(

I had the same prob once and did well with putting a hair wax on the thin ends to weigh them down and get them looking less wispy.  The one I have is Tigi brand - it comes in what looks like a thick metal tube and I think I got it at CVS.

Since your hair dresser, a) Did not follow instructions and, b) Gave you a haircut you specifically asked her not to do, you could try asking for a free hair consultation.

During a hair consultation, your hair dresser can show you different products to use on your hair and different drying methods. Ask her what effect you want the products/drying methods to have on your hair. Bring pictures if you can!

Thanks everyone. How long do you think it'll take for my hair to get its thickness back? Actually, how much does hair grow every month? Anything I can do to accelerate this?

Don't know if you can accelerate the natural growth process, relax it'll grow back.

this is why I cut my own hair, then the only person I'm angry at is me! haha. Plus I'm just lazy and do see a need to pay someone to give me a trim. If i wanted a serious style overhaul, I'll head to a hairdresser, otherwise I do fine on my own.

can you just cut it short? like chin length and then let it all grow out at once?

I hear pre-natal vitamins are really good for your hair! Not sure what it is specifically though. But I also hear they make you more fertile so be careful with that hahaha.

I have hair to my waist and I understand about the V.  I hate it too.  If it would be too traumatic to get it cut straight across the back to get rid of it, you could get it cut in a curve at the bottom.  Round it out.  At least that would get rid of the point and you could gradually go back to the blunt cut without going too short all at once.

OH P.S.  hair grows about 1/2 an inch a month

I definitely won't cut it short...that's for sure! BUT i like joyhorvath's idea of getting a curve at the bottom, that's a great solution for now! And I guess it'll thicken as it grows out slowly. Thanks!! :)
