Are bagels bad when trying to loose weight?
Asked by lulyaziz on Oct 21, 2009 in Nutrition

Answer

A typical 4½” (4 oz) bagel is very high in calories and carbohydrates but low in fiber because they are made with refined flour.  A bagel is equivalent to 4 slices of bread, which is to much starch to eat at one time, unless you are an endurance-event athlete or a growing boy.  Bagels have fallen victim to “portion distortion” over the past 20 years.  Think of a bagel as a "treat" food for every now and then, both for dieters and for anyone trying to maintain a healthy weight, or eat only half a bagel at a time.
