I just bought some really yummy Organic Bagels and just wondered if people had any fun lunch bagel ideas.

Today i made a sandwich with cream cheese, cucumber, tomato, onion and lettuce.

I typically don't eat bagels because the ones I like are the monster ones at places like Einstein Bros or Panera that have as many calories as a donut.

(But roasted red pepper hummus, goat cheese, fresh basil, and tomatoes is really good.)

I second that. 1 bagel is approximately 4 slices of bread, depending on the brand you get. It can be close to 400 calories eek... and you feel hungry real soon, cos the calories are empty.

I don't eat bagels (for reasons mentioned previously) but when I used to, I would spread hummus on both sides and put spinach and sliced tomatoes in the middle.  Or sometimes sprouts and cucumbers.  Yum!

ah i used to love bagels when i lived in nyc.
around indiana, there isn't any bagel shops though, and i never cared to buy those packaged bagels from the grocery store.
i probably haven't had a bagel in 4 years because of that...

my favorite used to be blueberry bagel with strawberry cream cheese though. i like them better than donuts and a large one was definately dense enough for a meal for me...it's not a shinning beacon for health foods but  think there are a lot worse options for "empty" calories than a bagel out there.

empty calories is a term that seems to get lightly thrown around?
i usually think stuff like alcohol, soda, chips, candy...not filling to even the slightest and cannot sustain for a meal at all.

A whole-grain bagel is definately not a source of empty calories. I put hummus, sliced bell pepper, shredded carrot, and cherry tomatoes on mine. If the bagel I am having is big, I just cut back on bread for the rest of the day.

For example:

Bagel for breakfast (4 ounces of bread), wrap sandwich for lunch (1 ounce of bread), veggies & hummus for snacks, 1 slice of bread at dinner (1 ounce of bread), oatmeal for snack (1 ounce of bread).

I love Tofutti cream cheese with sliced avocado and cucumber with some salsa :)

I also like peanut butter and sliced banana with cinnamon

...or some marinara sauce with grilled peppers, mushrooms, olives, archichoke hearts and carmelized onions (as a bagel pizza)

PB yummm

cream cheese (all sorts of flavors..)

lox and cream cheese!

I like the bagel to be plain with a side salad :)

Is it just me... or does anyone else find bagels horribly chewy and heavy-going?

Me too!   or with PB and bananas!

hummus, cucumber and bean sprouts!! mmmm mmmm

^^that sounds yummy!^^

For those of you looking for a tasty, low cal bagel, President's Choice (Canadian Brand) makes a small to medium size bagel that has about 150-160 calories per bagel.

(Roasted-red-pepper hummus, cucumbers and tomatoes! Delicious!)

i eat bagels by the french meadow bakery: they are yeast free bagels, all whole grain, sprouted and easy to digest. the yeast free fermentation sourdough breaks them down into easy to digest breads.

they even make a hemp bagel with 20 grams of protien (from hemp protien, which is a complete one too), 6 grams of omega 3,6,9's and only 34 carbs. and only 260 calories. your calling that empty calories? its practically a meal in a bagel, you can just put jam on this baby and its complete

Wow!  Is this like an actual bake shop or do they sell this in stores?

I have 2 favorites when it comes to dressing up a bagel...

1.  I love to put cream cheese then spread salsa on top.  :]

2.  Marinara sauce.  I toast it then break it into pieces and dip it in marinara sauce.

Yummmmmmm
