Why do bagels have such a bad rep?
Seriously, I know that a large bagel is like consuming 4 pieces of bread but there is no real reason to avoid them really. Is it because of the whole atkins craze, thats why people speak badly about them? I havent had a bagel in quite sometime but now I can't really figure why I havent. Yes they can be around 300 calories but what makes them an unhealthy breakfast or lunch? Throw some fat free cream cheese on there and you have a nice low calorie meal.
I have a sandwich of some kind for lunch pretty much everyday, whether it's on a bagel or sandwich bread. I only count calories and fat, but I keep aware of what I've eaten. If I have a sandwich at lunch, I try not to have bread at dinner, which rules out hamburgers and such. (I can't go bunless lol) You don't have to be too strict about it, just be mindful.
I had this one guy come into my work and I forget how it came up, but he told me that bread was the Devil's invention, and how he lost more weight by cutting it out. Now he just said bread, he never mentioned oatmeal, potatoes, or any other "starchy" natural carb.
It made me think, and if he can do it then more power to him. But I need my french toast and bagels. ![]()

Well, the person who advised me on my lifestyle changes is dead against bagels as well. To be honest, I was never really a fan of them either. But I really like my cinnamon-raisin/peanut butter "carb loaded calorie bombs", and they fit in my calorie budget for the day, so what the heck... :) Plus I've met my weight goals, and she hasn't, so she can't say too much.
Wait are you talking about ME when you say... "and she hasn't"??? Um, OK....
As for the bagels: each to their own - I simply state my opinion/views and people can take or leave em!

No, he's talking about the person who advised his lifestyle changes (probably a dietician or trainer etc.) and this person hasn't met her weight goals... basically he's mocking her. She avoid bagels but still hasn't achieved her goals, while he eats bagels and has achieved his goals.
Unless you were advising his lifestyle changes, I don't think he was talking about you haha
"the person who advised me on my lifestyle changes is dead against bagels as well"
...just to clear things up.
(unless I read that wrong)
for the record, I don't eat bagels either... they seem like such a waste of calories. Calories I could be spending on something else, something less nutritionally void, high GI, and full of carbs... like my delicious flax seed pancakes!!
or I could eat about 4-5 over easy WHOLE eggs for the amount of calories a bagel contains, and probably be a lot more satisfied for a lot longer then any bagel would make me... more nutrition too!!
bagels are so dense too, it hurts me to swallow them...

You read it correctly.
And while I was losing weight, I didn't eat bagels either. But now that I've got extra calories to burn every day, I figure a half a bagel every so often isn't the end of the world. And since I'm running regularly, extra carbs aren't even a no-no. But I'm certainly not saying that they're a wonder-food suitable for everyone, either.

Got it got it got it! ha ha Sorry - lots of stuff going on in my head! ha ha (As I am sure everyone else has too so perhaps that is not a good excuse)... Any who! Good Luck with things!
Yeah, my rye bagels have 230 calories, 10g of protein and 7g fibre per bagel, and no artificial ingredients. I've always wondered why people think they're so nutritionally void, because they seem pretty nutritious to me!
NY style bagel shops could have bagels for 400+ cals, u dont need to have it for every meal, u can have it daily, its just about balance, whatever u want, again, its just food!
I'm not a big fan of food that I can eat with my hands. Donuts, bagels, burgers. Hand to mouth. Gone in a few fast gulps. Foods of last resort for when you're in a hurry.
With donuts and bagels I'm hungry an hour later, too. And having put down 300 calories in a shot, it eats into my snack allowance.

i think bagels are healthy so long as they are made from 100% whole wheat.
