Just wondering what some of you consider as the worst / unhealthiest food?
Would you consider it to be store bought baked pastries - for example a chocolate chip muffin or cookie - its just fat (ie. butter/oil) and sugar and refined carbs. There is zero nutrition in it. No vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, etc.
And not filling at all....
I tried to think what could be worse.... maybe french fries? Cause they are deep fried in oil, but at least they were once potatoes....
probably not pizza or chicken nuggets or fatty cuts of meat - cause afterall, there is some protein in it after the fat (unlike fries or pastries)
What do you think? What's the worst in your opinion?
It's ok to eat food just for the sake of enjoying it, and not because it provides nutritional value. Just saying....
UD
actually there are many baked goods that do in fact have nutritional value, if you were to pick a banana bran muffin or blueberry bran muffin, there is TONS of fiber, often whole wheat flour, and minimally processed ingredients. I've seen some that don't even use sugar, they use honey or agave nectar, have healthy nuts, and only the necessary amount of oil to actually make the pastry. They aren't ALL bad and can fit into a balanced diet
a honey oat bran muffin from mimi's cafe has..
387 calories, 9g protein, 9g fiber, and only 10g fat...that's not too shabby.
from starbucks you can get a banana bran muffin for 410 calories, 8g protein, and 6g fiber with 14g fat...so really they aren't that bad.
and i think this can EASILY fit into a balanced diet. just pair it with a hard boiled egg and a cup of tea for breakfast and you're good to go...a bit indulgent and shouldn't be done everyday but it definitely works!!
I am aware that its fine to eat foods with less nutritional value because you enjoy it, and I do it.
I am aware that there are healthier choices as well, and I also choose those.
However, what I AM curious about is whether people think those zero-nutritional pastries are worse or french fries.... or something else? What do you avoid the most/least consume
The worst thing I can think of is a Krispy Kreme doughnut. It's also the most delicious thing that I can think of.
I was also going to say donuts..deep fried + no nutrition. :P
I think baked goods etc are all ok...
What is the worst...is OVERSIZED baked goods!
Don't forget that the body needs energy (calories) to function. In that light I actually think that the very worst zero-nutritional foods are the legions of 'diet' products out there. Not only do they provide no nutrition and very little useful energy but they're completely tasteless and joyless as well!!! Left on a desert island with 'zero calorie noodles' and you'd be dead inside a fortnight.... now that's unhealthy
At least if you sink your teeth into a wonderful 'pain au chocolat' or some chunky-cut deep-fried chips you're getting some satisfaction and pleasure, along with lots of useful energy. Sometimes a 'refined carb' is the only thing that hits the spot!
The fries are healthier imho, since they don't have sugar added on top of the starch and fat. If you salt your fries heavily and eat them with lots of ketchup I'd take the Twinkie over the fries.
But neither is a junk food if it satisfies nutritional NEEDS. When I'm exercising and burning 300 calories per hour I eat fatty high carb snacks like pastries and ice cream (usually not salty snacks like fries, though - for some reason they're not as appetizing). The body is not a great discriminator on where it gets its blood glucose from. It doesn't care whether the simple carbs it digests come from a Clif bar, a Twinkie or a high fiber whole wheat health muffin. Any of these snacks puts the glucose in the bloodstream within minutes of consumption.
Right now I'm sitting in a semi comatose state in front of this computer burning 70 calories an hour. The last thing I need is a snack of Fritos. In moderation, while exercising, at lunch, yes. Now, no.
I have to agree that the "unhealthiest" are probably the insanely processed but still low calorie/fat foods that are always being promoted. They are so full of chemicals or added this or that to make them taste good. The chemicals lead to a lot of inflammation and other bad effects because your body just doesn't know how to process them. They just stay in your system. Yuck.
If you are going for the unheathiest as far as saturated fat/calorie/sodium content I would have to go with chili-cheese fries. I mean, deep fried potatoes covered with mounds of cheese and fatty chili. talk about a heart stopper! I don't even want to think about how many hours I'd have to spend on the treadmill to burn those off.
Mmmmmmm Doughnuts .. Doh !!!!!
