It's baseball season. And while I'm getting healthy and gaining weight with the resources and help of this site and the FANTASTIC people on it, I wanna talk baseball.
I'm a diehard Philadelphia Phillies fan, so Mets people are welcome so I can remind you ever so gently about how you didn't win the league last year.
A few other topics..
Clemens may have used steroids but he's still the greatest pitcher of all time, Babe Ruth has been PROVEN to be the greatest ballplayer ever (over Barry Bonds), baseball is the most overall challenging of all team sports, the sacrifice bunt and the steal are the dumbest plays in the game, George Mitchell is a bum, steroids were good for baseball (if they disappear immediately), and tons of other stuff..
Edit: Original post sounded like it was written by a twelve-year-old. And due to recent evidence I can no longer say Clemens was innocent.
haha alright, i'll start you off with an easy one.
whose the only player in history who has 10 world championship rings?
oh wait, efff. lol sorry you didnt want to be asked questions to test how well you knew the game, you wanted to like discuss things... sorry :\
i'm up for discussing steroids for sure. after all bonds started the whole thing basically lol
btw. any soccer fans who love fernando torres or cristiano ronaldo. hit me up ;)
I LOOOOOVE BASEBALL.
Let's go to the batting cages instead of talking about baseball stars though...let's PLAY!
vicereine: oh yes indeed. while the MLB regular season doesn't start for a couple more months, college baseball's opening games begin in February.
rmgarcia: hey at least ichiro's fun to watch. on the topic of losing, here's an interesting stat: the Phillies are the oldest, continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in all of professional sports. they are also the first professional team ever to reach 10,000 losses. lol they did it last summer. i love my phils.
jessikkaa_x3: yogi berra. interesting that u would choose a question involving a yankee lol.
and by the way, ur not allowed to ever mention the sport of soccer in this thread. :P
steroids steroids steroids.. u know what, on second thought, i really do not wanna talk ab steroids right now lol. it depresses me. i'd need a specific question or i'd ramble on for days.
rather, here's a question for anyone: in your opinion, what single action in all of sports most epitomizes raw power in its magnitude, awe-factor, and athletic/skill requirements? what single action makes you just stop, watch, and be like... "Damn."

Christiano Ronaldo looks very pretty with his shirt off, which is why I prefer him over Ronaldino and why I backed Portugal in the World Cup after Australia was robbed. That Portugal-France match was one of the most amusing things in football history.

Fedor Emelianenko vs anyone. He is so judicious and reads people so well, and then has the skills to ktfo his opponent. He really is amazing to watch. However, more recently, Georges St. Pierre in his last matchup with Matt Hughes truly blew my mind. He epitomizes the term "natural athlete".
Steroids are the bane of my sport's (MMA) existence too. I just want them to go away.
Edit: oh and I don't watch baseball, sorry. :x
Aww, poor phillies! I don't watch much NL baseball, so I don't really keep up with those teams so much, but I definately didn't know that stuff about it! Oldest, continuous, one-name, once-city..that's pretty impressive.
I am definately getting excited about baseball. As I was walking home from the gym today, which takes me past the baseball field, I saw a bunch of the team going by. They start playing in 2 weeks, woo! And spring training season (games) starts... the 28th? I think. I had to look that up, maybe I'm wrong. And the regular season starts in...51 days. Sweet! :)
As for your question... I don't know. When it comes to baseball at least, I'd much rather watch an exciting game with lots of action, but I can't think of much else that's more impressive than some of those pitchers. Complete games, no-hitters... that's ridiculous. Boring to watch, but really, really impressive, as well!
Well my screen name sums me up hehehe--
spring training is around the corner and I'm looking foward to listening to the games on my xm radio. My hubby got me an XM radio a couple years ago for valentines day-- just for the MLB and spring training games!!
Being in AZ we see Bonds all the time and I just don't like his attitude. I like the guys who when they hit a homer don't act like their sh** don't stink but run the bases just like if it were only a double. I won't do the steroid discusson either and hope MLB can get over this darkness soon.
The best plays I like to see are the ones where the outfielders fly up into the stands and over the walls and come back with ball in glove - or preventing those potential home runs. The dbacks have had good stats for the double plays as well and some I've seen them pull off were pretty amazing.

Im also a little anxious to see what Yankees will be like without Joe Torre haha.
Oh my gosh, I totally forgot about that! That's right! Haha, we'll see...
rmgarcia and stanbob are the only people so far to get what i was asking about a single action lol... anyways, in my opinion, the homerun stands as the greatest action in sports. it is the most sucessful rendition of the most difficult action in sports (hitting a baseball)
http://www.projectview.org/MathandBaseball/Mo stDifficultActinAllSports.htm
Hitting a baseball has been described as the single most difficult feat in sports. And for good reason. Imagine the quality of hand-eye coordination required to make contact with a little white sphere traveling at over 95 miles per hour, using a 2 ¾ inch wide piece of wood being swung at over sixty miles per hour. Consider the intense concentration. A batter standing just 56 feet from the pitcher's hand has only about 45/100's of a second to decide if he'll swing, predict where the ball will be, instruct his muscles to move, and bring the bat to a point of impact. If all goes well, the bat and ball rendezvous a few inches in front of the plate. The ball is crushed to half its diameter, springs back, and is launched on its return flight at speeds close to a hundred miles per hour. Timing is essential. The difference between a hit over second base and a foul near first or third is a swing mistimed by 0.01 second. Baseball is the only sport where being a failure seven out of ten times is considered to be outstanding - only about a dozen players in each major league bat .300 annually.
what does everyone think ab the pedro martinez incident? (attending and semi-participating in a cockfight)
i agree with those who say that after the michael vick incident, pro athletes should be especially careful to put on an animal-friendly image for the public. so martinez is an idiot. not to mention that i feel like cockfighting is wrong.

There's baseball in the winter?
There is big time baseball in winter -- Its just down Mexico way!! Lots of MLB players play winter ball in South America and Japan. Here in AZ the Fall League is really popular too - especially for the AA or AAA players looking to make it to the big time come spring.

I am so excited for baseball season to start. I'm all about the Mariners. I don't care if they suck, I still love them. I'm (obviously) from Seattle, and that will never change! haha.
the marineners picked up eric bedard-a canadian :)
i want the bluejays to just make the playoffs this year but in a division with the yanks and red soxs it isnt very likely. I also hope rolen helps us out this year and i was so happy when the jays signed ecstein as he is one of my fav players also i exspect a big year for ankeil of the cards.

I love watching a good shortstop go deep in the hole and throw out a good runner at first.
john macdonald of the jays did this alot the past season for the jays but i think he will be the backup now since we got ecstein but hey jays should atleat give him a shot as he is way better defencely than ecstein
Original Post by canadaleaf:Yeah, I was just reading an article about that last night! Sounds great. We could certainly use another good, reliable starter...the marineners picked up eric bedard-a canadian :)
