Beautiful Amazon's over 200

Quote  |  Reply
Hello & Happy New Year!
After having read many posts written by women with similar body types and weight goals as mine I thought it might be fun to start a thread of communication dedicated to women over 5'5" and over 200 pounds.
I am 5'7" & as of last Sunday currently weighing in at 212lbs. My goal is to reach 175lbs by September and would love to share this journey with other gals who are committed to healthy weight loss. Who's game?

just another thought...  as I was thinking about a compromise...

I've always loved the word Bodacious!   but then bodacious ta ta's comes to mind from Top Gun :::giggles:::

at first I wondered about something like Gorgeous Amazons for a title...

but again I ask... what about the people who never join b/c of the use of the word, even within the thread....

personally I think that women still suffer a lot of gender discrimination and abuse.  More than that larger and less than "model" or "hollywood" beautiful men and women are still the main group of discrimination and mental/societal abuse that is still tolerated in society and the work place.  That won't change until people stand up and say enough.

Like they did for the other areas of discrimination/abuse for race, religion, handicap, etc.  Even though there are now laws against these, it still happens underneath the surface in a myriad of small ways all the time... So people still need to stand up and say No.  Enough.

So... that's my concern.    What do you think?
Hi Laurenz ~ we were posting at the same time.

my point... is some words can't be cleaned up b/c of the hurt and pain of the reader.  And what if those women don't join but might have joined instead?

Another term I had thought of was like Xena, Princess Warrior?  The epitomy of the other image?

Ok, I have to leave for a while... but will be back later :)
Anyone use  yahoo messenger? I am new on this site and would like to add some friends to my list for support.
Cece, Congrats on your weight loss so far. Wow. I hope to have the same success as you. I love hearing the stories of the people who have succeeded, it always gives me that much more motivation to continue knowing that it is fully possible to accomplish. I have mini-goals, as I know most of us do...my first being 200, then anything under 200 :), but 189, that seems to be where I drop to a 14 and I look good in a 14. (Oh the joys of being tall). So what all do you do to lose weight? Mainly good eating habits or lots of exercise or a little of both? You must really stick to the plan pretty good, about 90 pounds in a year, that is just awesome. Well, please do drop in because I am sure I have tons to learn from you.

Lauren
Thank you, Lauren! :o)
You know, my first thought when I saw the 210 this morning was how close I am to the 2-0-9 ! It felt really great and thank you again for the WTG, it means a lot.

To come back to the topic of the word "Amazon", both Jules & Lauren have made valid points. There is no way to walk through life without offending someone, somewhere, somehow... in most cases it isn't even concious. Also, there is a need to honor and respect those who have had to endure discrimination from the less enlightened.

However, as Audre Lorde says, "your silence will not protect you" and in this case silencing the group's use of "Amazon" not only violates 1st amendment rights but also can be viewed as support of the word being used as a derogatory term.

As Lauren said earlier, anyone reading this thread has no choice but to accept the fact that we use the word in it's truest form, definition and meaning. Any other interpretation of the word is not something we can be held responsible for.

At this point there isn't anywhere else for this piece of the conversation to go and I would truly appreciate being able to move on from it.

I see two member inspired choices that have been offered for the title of this thread, "Big, beautiful women over 200" and "Goddesses over 200"- whichever of these that is less offensive should be chosen by you, Jules, and implemented immediately, please.

Enjoy the rest of your day, Ladies.
Peace & good health to everyone.

Avesha congrats on 210lbs. I think it is so cool the you and I and i think someone else are almost exactly the same height and weight.I am 5'7" and 211 however I wont be losing any weight atlest for the next couple of day as my cycle started a couple of days ago and I am bloated and I always weigh 2-3 lbs. more when aunt flo is visiting.I too cant wait till I get 2-0-something especially since I was 205 when hubby and I met.He has never seen me weigh less that will be exciting! I  wish i had a visual of what you all look like it seems like all my like I have been the only one I know that weigh what I weigh and are the same height.

Anyways i agree lets just drop the whole Amazon thing agree to disagree....I like "Goddesses over 200".

Amanda
Hello! I like the Amazon title and I was sad to see it changed. I am 5'8" and no longer 200lbs. (scale was 198 the last two days!) But I still think this may be the best place for me.  I am also looking to add some friends so I can stay motivated!
Hi Everyone :)

I think there can be a compromise for now here because the word has both good and bad connotations in society.  I think the website and moderators would reserve the right to discontinue the use of any term, phrase or practice that hurts or harms any of the members.

It's clear that you have found a group of women who are using the word in a positive manner and who feel represented by the word, and that's a very good thing.

The one thing we need you to do is to use the report button if Amazon is ever used as a derogatory in here.

For now, if you continue using the phrase within the thread in the *good* way so to speak to represent a group of strong, beautiful, tall and/or athletic or _______?  Should not be a problem for now.

I've thought about this all afternoon and I don't find anything else that conveys the same intent.  So perhaps even reinstating Amazon in the title with a positive word... in front.  What word, I would prefer to let you choose.... Fabulous?  Outstanding?  And do you still want the over 200 in it?

The goal to be inclusive and for people to feel welcome and to understand that you are focusing on the fact that the women here are ____________?  I don't want to set the criteria for your group :)

I'll be happy to change the title after you pick something.

Cheers, jules
LOL......I was going to say more about the use of Amazon, but I wont. Thanks to everyone for all the good reading.
Jules, Avesha, Lauren and everyone else that has added their "two cents" into the amazon issue.  I have to say that I liked the fact that everyone was able to have their say without being offensive.  Jules: TY for having an open mind and working with this group.  I was truly considering leaving this site altogether because of this issue.  We are all here to lose weight and support eachother in the process.  There are hundreds of threads to meet everyone's needs and this thread meets mine.  I think Beautiful Amazon's would be a great, positive title for this group.

Hopefully, we will be able to put this issue to rest and get back to the reason we are all here.  Take care all!  Dani
I will second Dani's vote for "Beautiful Amazon's over 200" and her thanks to Jules for an open mind.

Thanks to everyone here too :)  Discussion is always good!

Avesha ~ in the future, if you ever want to update your title or original post Happy New Year message to reflect a seasonal message or special event (like people who host groups often do), please just hunt me down in one of the threads I host, or add me as a friend and leave a message in my journal.  Or ask any of the mods, I'm sure they would be glad to help :)

Cheers to everyone ~ you've got a gr8 group here :)
Woohoo, we are Amazons again! Ok, I said I wasnt going to say anymore on the subject but this is cuz I am happy and it is not a debate anymore. :) I have to agree with Dani on a couple issues...everyone who did have something to say about the topic did it with great tact and probably restraint and nothing offensive was said. That right there makes me even more want to be a part of this group. Yeah Amazons, you rock! OMG, I forget what the other thing was. LOL...oh I remember Right before I sat down right here I was taking a shower and this whole issue was on my mind (my family was happy, I wasnt singing in the shower). Anyhow, I was thinking, like Dani, that I wasnt even going to post to the boards anymore because the fear of offending someone was just not something I was wanting to worry about. I guess I was offended that someone was offended by a word, that in my mind, speaks of strength, self-assurance and self-power. So, let me sum up. I am proud to be an Amazon not just for the name but for the people in the thread. And, back on topic...did a weekend exercise session today since I was feeling a little too hungry but I HAVE to take tomorrow off, I hurt. I am not sore as much as my muscles are just exhausted. I really think I could be one of those people who exercise all the time...I love how it makes me feel except when I do too much. lol Today, intake 1500, expended 3000. I am sure I will have another couple hundred in snacks tonight. Boy, I really expected I would eat more calories than that today...I guess I did make good choices when I was hungry.

Lauren
....skids back in with a last thought :)

i wish i was tall enuf?  ;)

anyway, Avesha ~ your Audre Lorde quote is one of my favorites "your silence will not protect you."

as is this from Martin Niemoller (1892 -1984), "...and when they came for me, there was no-one left to speak out for me."

i'd like to thank everyone again for expressing their opinions thoughtfully and respectfully.  Debate, discussion of ideas is good and it's how we can all learn and grow :)

and please do report any derogatory or mis-use of words, inflammatory comments or posts, foul language etc.  Our goal here is to make the forums a good experience for everyone :)

cheers, jules
Lauren,

Thanks so much for the kind words!

I have lost a lot just by counting the calories basically. I kept my calories around 1200 to 1500. I logged everything for many, many months in a row.  I said no a lot -- I was happy I did.  I really have not been good with working in exercise - I have just started doing that in the last couple of weeks because I was stalled for the last couple of months.  I am working in challenges to give me increased motivation to push past my stall.  And looking for good advice/ideas from the forums.

I have gotten worried lately reading the boards that I am keeping my calories too low though.  But I really had only a few days with calories that were under 1200.

I don't eat out much and when I do I am more in control.  I think most people know what you have to do to be healthier, but it is just really hard to make the right choices because there is way too much temptattion everywhere.  I never really did make good choices before.  I think I felt like I would be deprived all the time.  Now I see it as if I am punishing myself by making bad food choices if I stray.  It is strange - I never thought I would be successful and I tried so many times in the past.

I really believe that if I can do it, so can many others here!
Thanks for the timing advise....however since my day already starts incredibly early....i'm going to have to find another solution

Jules...as far as I'm concerned you may have a spot here as an honorary position...but then i'm new to this area and not the leader of the pack so to speak.....

One last question....

If anyone loses enough weight or should I say when...to take them under 200..do they need to leave?????
Love the new I mean old title...Haha! Thanks Jules how tall are you anyhow?

I was wondering that too kitten6335 if we have to leave after we go under 200.I am hoping to be there in the next month.
I can't believe all that I missed by leaving the boards on a Saturday!

SO Happy to be an Amazon again!  For me it is a new state of mind ~ "a tall and strong, athletic woman".  That is my goal everyday.  I've not always worked out and I when I have, I certainly didn't enjoy it like I do now.  Not that there aren't days that I'd rather sleep in!  I am changing my self perception by training my body and my mind.

So, when I slip out of the 200's and into the 100's ~ I'm at 204 now ~ I'll still be an Amazon and will check in with the rest of the gang here!!

You go girls!!
I just found this thread and would love to join in! I am 5 7 and started out last year at 285...I am currently 232 so I am now making progress again after a 2 month "slip". SO glad I found this site and people like me!!  I am a small frame but people always said "but you carry your it so well!!" Carry WHat oh...you mean my fat suit! Yuck.

Got to change this bodyinto one I am proud...no more excuses!
Welcome, Ladydragon2u! Congratulations on your weight loss, we are lucky to have you :o)

I saw that a couple of women asked "do we have to leave when we go under 200?"   As far as I'm concerned, Heck no! :o)

I don't want to have to leave you when I hit 199, it would be so sad to lose this group. We'll still be strong, powerful, tall women at 199 and under... maybe we'll just adjust the thread title again... Ha!

Happy Sunday everyone!
Good luck with your weekend battles... mine is going surprisingly smoothly to which I am SO grateful!

Peace,
Avesha
