When you go to bed and calorie burn

Quote  |  Reply

Just was thinking about this.......if you usually go to bed at 10 PM and get up at 6 AM.

You then go to bed at 2 AM and get up at 7 AM

Do you burn more calories because you were awake and active an extra four hours?

Always been curious as to how the body works in that capacity.

I don't know for sure, but here's my guess - you might burn more calories because you are awake those extra hours, but assuming that you are then more tired the next day, since you got less sleep, you'll be less active than normal, and you'll burn less calories the next day - so it will basically come out in a wash.

I agree with what Amethyst said.  Reducing sleeping time in the hope of increasing calorie expenditure is not a good idea. The metabolism-slowing effects of exhaustion will probably erase any short-term calorie burn. And for optimum gains in fitness, we need adequate rest time.  This isn't to say that you should lay on the couch all day, but 7-9 hours devoted to sleep should be part of any wellness plan.

It was not a weight loss strategy I was just curious

I understand your thought processes I think random things like that all the time.

I burn more when I sleep better.  I also don't over eat I tend to eat when I  stay awake to late like my brain turns off the stop button.  You were thinking the once and awhile out dancing late night? right?  that type of stuff.

I asked a simple ? like that a long time ago and everyone took it the wrong way.  Mine was if you wear heels do you burn more calories because you use different muscles?  They thought I was working out in heels running I think, I was thinking shopping/ work/dancing things some people normally wear heels for.  I got yelled at so much.

I've wondered about that, too.  If I get up early I usually end up eating an extra mini-breakfast, so I've wondered if those calories balance out.  (Not worried, just wondered.)

From personal experience, I have to concur with amethystgirl.  Recently I had a night with just 3 hours sleep, and I really noticed the difference when I could barely do my next day's workout!  It really affected my performance.

D: Your body NEEDS sleep. You need at least 7-8 hours a night. Sleep deprivation is dangerous. Even if you are just sleeping a few hours a night it can, and will catch up to you.

I would tend to think that you would burn more calories because you are probably moving for those additional hours rather than lying still sleeping.  However, I find that if I go out at night or something and don't get to bed until 2am that I need an extra little snack when I come home.  So, even if I did "burn" extra calories because I was awake longer than usual it is probably a wash with the extra calories your body is asking you to eat to sustain that additional time awake.  I actually think it's probably worse in the end to stay up late because, at least for me, I end up snacking more.

Maybe this is just me, but on nights that I get extra sleep, like Saturday morning sleep-ins, I tend to weigh less in the morning.  I weigh at the same time for me rather than time of day (right after I get up, before I use the restroom).  I don't know if that's because I'm respirating out the extra water weight or what.  My appetite also goes WAY down that day.

On weekdays that I wake up groggy from lack of sleep, my scale weight's higher.  Again, just personal experience.  Results may vary!

Your body burns more calories sleeping than it does sitting around doing nothing.  If I'm recalling correctly, this is because certain hormones are active primarily while you're asleep.  So, in all likelihood, if you're not running around for those extra hours you're awake, you probably aren't going to burn more calories and may even burn less.  Proper sleep is a dieter's friend.  Smile
