Weight Loss
Moderators: duke3522, devilish_patsy, topanga1485, nycgirl, spoiled_candy, cmillington, coach_k Hi,
I was wondering how beer and liquor effect weight loss.. I go out every weekend and have drinks with friends. i usually drink schiner but im willing to switch to ultra light or even liquor. does anyone have any experience with this? the weekend is creeping up on me and i dont want to feel guilty about drinking.
Well.. every gram of actual alcohol contains 7 calories. Of course, as
any true drinker will tell you, one shot of liquor has about as much
alchohol as one glass of wine and one can of beer, so... figure it for
yourself :)

...so basically what hk is saying in a nut shell
"GO HARD, OR GO HOME!"

I work in the beverage alcohol industry, so not driking while on a diet is not an option for me. My tips would be to stay with regular beer (110-200 cal depending on the type of beer) - If you're in Ontario some beers (Lakes of Muskoka) have started putting nutritional labels on their boxes. Or white wine (60-100 calories depending on the type of wine), a dry wine (0) (Savuvingnon Blac, Chardonnay) will always be less calories than a sweet wine (Reisling).
Liquor can work, but stay away from Vodka Coolers, an insane amount of calorie in them, low end is around 250 (Smirnoff ice). They have a lot of sugar. If you decide to mix liquors vodka is the lowest with calories coming in usually between 80-110 depending on the type of vodka. But, remember you need to count what it is mixed with.
Liqueurs have the higest calorie counts some going up into the 300's and 400's.
Good luck.

Oh, and don't forget to drink lots of extra water because all alcohol is dehydrating.
my suggestion to you would be to drink vodka & club soda. O calories in the club soda and little in the shot of vodka. Be careful though they go down really nice...too nice sometimes!!
yeah vodka & soda for sure, or a double vodka + sugar free red bull - it's not good for you though (of course), but it's got a nice kick.
otherwise, i usually just have a glass of white wine.

Low cal drinks for me: rye and diet coke, rum and diet coke, rye and diet ginger ale, wine, light beer--but not too much of it! Don't be fooled by gin and tonic as regular tonic has almost as many calories as any other soft drink. (But it's my favourite drink. Sigh...)
Each shot of alcohol has about 70 calories in it. Good luck!

I still enjoy my Jack Daniels and diet cokes. I was on a kick of Vodka and Diet Mtn Dew for awhile. Last weekend it was Budlight, only reason I drank Budlight was because the Packers were playing. A bar I go to has a special during the games, everytime the Packers score a touch down, you get a free drink! They won, 38-10, so I had my fair share. :-)
I can only speak from my own experience but other than the obvious calories that you consume drinking also causes you to dehydrate but most importantly the more you drink the more you lose your willpower to resist foods, treats, etc. that you normally wouldn't consider wasting your calories on.
There is also the emotional end of things. After the up there is a down. Still it depends on the amount you drink.
I am currently working on limiting my alcohol consumption for those reasons.

triton - i loooooove jack&diet! do you know how many calories are in that? i estimated around 45 but i am so bad at that kind of thing!
i second the rum and diet (or gin with a diet tonic!) but one thing to remember is that they've found that without the sugar in your mixers, you absord more alchohol and faster, meaning you'll get drunk quicker and possibly have a worse hangover. especially if you're eating a low-cal diet anyway.
my drink of choice is a sam-adams light or a gin and tonic. yes, its cals, but if you stick to one, your're fine. OR, just have a nice heart-healthy glass of redwine (but stick to one!!)

Try Grey Goose vodka with club soda and a squeeze of lemon. It's delicious (tastes almost like ice water) and about 60 - 70 cals each.
The worst are specialty cocktails and martinis (like pina coladas, margaritas, chocolate and key lime martinis)...stay away from those (obviously)...they can pack up to 500 cals each depending on size and type of mixers.
And a Michelob Ultra-Lite now and then never hurts (I think about 90 cals each)!
But...in my opinion, liquor is definitely the way to go if you're watching what you drink calorie-wise.

I drink gin on the rocks when I go out--in the summer. In the winter,
it's knob creek neat. Both are a bit harsh, so you'll be sure to sip
them slowly. Plus it's easy to drink water along side them.
But, honestly, I hate to think about calorie consumption and dieting when I'm drinking and having a good time. So the best plan for me is to cushion my going out nights with some super healthy days ahead of time. So, if you know you are going out, eat really well that day, and maybe even two or three days befrehand, keep your caloric intake fairly modest, get in a good couple of work-outs, and drink lots of water. Then you sort of 'dilute' the sins of drinking. :)

How about vodka or rum and crystal light? Not the most appealing but it solves the problem of calories and dehydration.

My drink of choice is Stoli vodka and water with a lemon. I don't have to worry to much about dehydration, and if I feel like I'm drinking to fast I just get a glass of ice water and add it to my drink every so often. I feel like I'm keeping up with my friends, they don't know the difference and I don't feel horrible the next day :)
Thanks for all the help.. I think ill try vodka and crystal light..
although i doubt i can get that at a bar. maybe vodka and
clubsoda. even though ive never tried it. i love beer.. so its
going to be hard getting
used to ultra light. thanks guys!
