I made my first attempt at Beerocks last night. I used ground turkey and I think I figured them out to be somewhere around 300-350 calories. They came out delicious, not exactly pretty since I have never had to use dough and roll it out and fill things before but they tasted awesome!
Never heard of those. What are they? Recipe?
What's a 'beerock'? Some kind of pasty?
They are also called Bierocks.
Basically, a meat/cabbage stuffed roll. I love those things. I like to stuff them with sausage (precooked) and take as lunches -- just a little bit of microwaving and they are good to go.
Aww. While that sounds tasty, I totally came in here to say I think beer rocks too ;)
Does anyone have a healthy recipe for this, it sounds delicious.
While I don't have a healthy recipe for this, there is a highly rated one here that also has nutrition information. The health weak points are really the meat (how lean it is) and the fact that in the particular recipe it calls for two eggs.
I imagine if you substitute in a roll recipe you like that is also healthy and use lean meat, you could make quite a healthy one. Even reducing the amount of meat and adding some other veggies would probably help it health wise.
Hope that helps.
Thanks
Beerocks is a german food. It is very simple and next time I might use frozen wheat rolls to cut down the calories even more.
Recipe:
2 pounds of ground meat (beef, sirloin, I used lean turkey)
1 head of cabbage shredded
1 large white onion diced
1 clove garlic (diced,minced,shredded)
3 tablespoons black pepper
Rising dinner rolls or loafs, let them rise
Cook the meat and onions with garlic and salt, add the cabbage until it is soft but not squishy, (still some firmness) add the pepper, first 2 tablespoons and taste up to 3 tablespoons (I forgot this step and added all three at once and they were pretty spicy)
Let your dough rolls rise, roll them out using a pin and some flour into 6 inch circles, place the filling and seal them by pinching.
Brush an egg white/water mix over the top
Add to a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for about 2-25 minutes.
Here's another tip for those bierock lovers out there. I tried putting the filling in a warmed whole wheat pita. A whole lot less work and calories! I've never been too good with the dough part, but my Mom's are still the best. She uses the sweet roll dough and subs some whole wheat flour.
I made these 2 nights ago and my family loved them. They need a sauce or something though. My daughter dipped them in light Ranch and I used Thousand Island dressing. It made 20 of them with left over meat and cabbage. I used the Rhodes dinner rolls and 1/2 ground beef and 1 lb of ground turkey and about 3/4 of a cabbage head.
Does anyone know of a gravy or sauce that goes with it? Or are they suppose to be plain?

The filling is supposed to be, if not juicy, at least relatively moist. At least mine were.
And the recipe is very easy to "health-ify" by decreasing amount of meat (or using leaner meat) and increasing the amount of cabbage. It is also better to use home-made whole wheat pizza or bread dough.
