Beginning to run again

Quote  |  Reply

I saw this group and thought maybe this would be a perfect place to get advice and support. I have decided to loose a bunch a weight, and I want to start running again. Well actually start running for the first time.

I have had some knee surgeries which have caused me to not be very active. I have decided that I need to loose some weight and slowly start running. I am looking for some advice on where to start.

I currently do 30 mins on an elliptical machine and it is getting boring so I am up for a change. But I am not sure on where to start, any advice?

Hi,

First off - get the ok from your doctor.

Second - get some really good shoes that fit your foot, running stance, etc. Make sure you go to a specialized running store.

Everyone seems to love the Couch to 5K program and I have read it through and it seems very reasonable. So I would suggest taking a look at that. You can search the forums here on CC or look on the web.

What ever you decide - go slow. the walk / job approach is great at the beginning. Do not add more than 10% on per week to your mileage or there is a higher chance of injuries. It is ok to push but pain is NOT your friend and thus you should be careful.

Ice (as you may already know) is your friend so if you have discomfort use ice.

Good Luck.
