Should I believe the calorie count I get from my pedometer?
Asked by veedonfleece on May 29, 2009 in Fitness

I not sure if I should believe the pedometer or your site.  My pedometer says I burn 1,500 calories and Calorie Count says 504.  My hike is a brisk 15 minute mile with steep inclines and declines that I do the hike in 45 minutes.  It's hard to know how to calculate my diet given the 1000 calorie discrepancy.

Answer

I would believe the number you got from Calorie Count more than the number from your pedometer.  Pedometers measure steps most accurately when walking is fast on a flat surface at a consistent speed.  I would not expect a pedometer to be accurate when stride length and speed are inconsistent and the surface is highly variable.  Furthermore, pedometers that measure calories burned are notoriously inaccurate.  Even extreme activities, like handball and rock climbing, burn only around 500 calories an hour.
