thanks
These (available other places too - I just know this place).
Don't bother getting one pair of weights, because you'll soon need to increase them. With adjustable (and there is no need to get the fancy ones that cost a lot more and the mechanism will break a lot sooner) dumbbells, you can go for quite a while, and then just purchase extra plates to add weight.
I got my 40lb set of dumbells on sale at Waly-mart for $20.00, Gold's Gym brand. I'm sure amethystgirl's are better quality, but these have worked fine for me. They come with four 7.5 pound weights and four 2.5 pound weights so you can adjust.
From the pic online that I found, I think I'd rather mine for a couple reasons - longer handles so you can add more weight (plus I'm not sure if standard plates would fit on those, wes?) plus I like the screw on ends better than the spring thingies to keep the plates on.
We have a barbell that uses the spring thingies (come on people, is there a name for those?) but we never use them, because if we are tipping the barbell enough for the weights to come off, we'd probably be better off if the weights fell. But with dumbbells, I like knowing the plates will stay on no matter how I twist them.
But if price is an issue (I think in store, the one's I linked to were cheaper than online, plus, shipping is a pain), weights are weights ;)
I made the mistake of getting the ones with the "clips" to hold the weights on when I first bought mine. I think that's what amethystgirl is talking about.
They were a complete pain in the *ss. The weight plates were fine, but I replaced the actual handle parts (dumbbells and barbell) with ones that are threaded and have the screw on piece. Much easier to change out plates, and it seems so much safer. I never trusted the clips, even though I had to use pliers to get them off half the time.
I don't think the bars were very expensive, and the nice part is if you buy things separate, you can just get more as you need them. I started out with ~100 pounds of weights in my "starter kit" but I've bought about 60 pounds more mostly because I was getting frustrated having to switch things around a lot.
I guess I actually did need more, as (when my knee is not "tweaked") I am deadlifting about 115 pounds.
I entirely agree! If you EVER want to put more than 30 pounds on the dumbells, then these are not for you! The clips seem to work just fine for what its worth... but they do take a little time to get on and off.
My husband bought similar ones to the ones amethystgirl has posted. We like them because they are adjustable and you can add on weight and we also liked the fact that the fasteners twisted on. We bought ours at Sports Authority! I can't remember the price cuz this was a couple of years ago...
